Friday, April 17, 2009 Yankees Minor league wrap The AAA Scranton Yankees won again tonight by the score of 11-0. They are now 9-0, will they ever lose a game. Phil Hughes got the start pitching five and two thirds innings allowing no runs on five hits and six strikeouts. Steven Jackson pitched two scoreless innings giving up three hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Brett Tomko finished it off with one and a third scoreless innings with one hit, walk and strikeout. Phil Hughes is 2-0 with a 2.31 era on this young season. The offense had a big day led by Angel Berroa who was four for five with two homeruns and five rbis. Doug Bernier had two hits and a walk, Todd Linden had two hits and rbis. Shelly Duncan had two hits, a walk and rbi. Eric Duncan had a hit and walk. The AA Trenton Thunder won tonight by a score of 5-4. Zach McAllister got the start pitching five and a third giving up three runs, only two were earned on four hits with three walks and strikeouts. What to do with Wang

It looks like the Yankees are going to skip Chien-Ming Wangs start on Friday in Fenway Park. They have a off day on Thursday and it looks like they may have Wang throw a simulated game of 80-100 pitches, they can also stop him during the game and correct some mechanical issues. They then will have him make his next start after that which would be Wednesday in Detroit. If he doesn't make significant progress whatever that is to them then they would call up Phil Hughes to take his spot and put him in the pen as the long man. Phil Hughes has been pitching well down in AAA Scranton and also pitched well in spring training.

I think I would of put him on the DL and sent him down to Florida to work with Pitching guru Billy Conners but this seems like a reasonable compromise. I know a lot of people are worried about the pen but the back end of Bruney and MO is solid and honestly I think the rest has been affected by Wangs poor performances. I think Coke will be ok and Marte has his struggles but they will have to use him as the lefty specialist and try to get him right that way. Albaladejo has pitched well, I think in another month or so you will see Melancon and Robertson instead of Veras and Ramirez anyway which is the right way to go and those guys are strikeout machines and young.

I know a lot of people say 7-6 is a bad start but in the games Wang doesn't pitch they are 7-3 so I think its just a matter of taking care of Wang one way or another and otherwise they are fine, A-rod will be back soon enough which will be a huge help and I wouldn't be suprised to see Melky playing more instead of Gardner if he continues to struggle, Melky has been playing well. Wednesday, April 22, 2009 Phil Hughes is Ready if called upon Phil Hughes made the start for the AAA Scranton Yankees tonight and pitched well. If the Yankees are looking at bringing him up to take Chien-Ming Wangs spot in the rotation well he is trying to help make their decision. I honestly don't know what Wang has to show them tomorrow to make his next start which would be in Detroit on Tuesday but I am sure it would have to be something really fantastic. Here are Phil Hughes numbers so far this year including tonights start. He has pitched nineteen and a third innings giving up eleven hits with three walks and nineteen strikeouts. He is 3-0 with a 1.86 era, the most important thing for him is health and so far he has been healthy and pitching great. I really expect to see Phil Hughes up pitching in Detroit looking to redeem himself after a terrible year last year when he was trusted with a spot in the rotation. I would like to hear some thoughts on this topic, so please comment and let me know your opinions. The other question is if Phil Hughes comes up and pitches well you would think he would keep pitching but then what do the Yankees do with Chien-Ming Wang?? I would assume he would go to the bullpen and try and straighten himself out but if Phil Hughes grabs this oppurtunity then hey good for him. The bottom line is winning games and the Yankees have to do what they feel is best for the team so we will stay tuned. Posted by Gary W. Yanks/Detroit Recap The Yankees ended the losing streak with a 11-0 win in Detroit. Franchise Phil restored order with 6 shutout innings, he had 2 walks, 2 hits and 6 strikeouts. He would of pitched the 7th but didn't need too after the Yankees scored 10 runs in the 7th. Mark Melancon also pitched a 1-2-3 inning and Edwar Ramirez and Jose Veras finished the game off, Jose Veras hit a guy and gave up a hit but got out of it. Hideki Matsui continued his hot hitting with 2 hits and a RBI and Robinson Cano also had 2 hits and a RBI. Nick Swisher had 2 hits, 2 walks and a RBI, Melky Cabrera had 2 hits, 2 walks and a RBI. It looks like Melky Cabrera wants his job back and for right now has it back, he has to keep playing. Jose Molina had 1 hit but it was a grandslam. Derek Jeter and Johnny Damon each had a hit a piece. The Yankees needed a game like this and maybe now they will relax. Joba Chamberlain will try to get them a series win tomorrow going against young Rick Porcello from NJ at 7:05 on the YES network. I hope the Yankees hitting will now get on a roll again, A-rod continues to progress and it looks like he could be back next week or not too long after that which will be a huge boost for the team. Yanks/Angels recap

The Yankees looked half asleep today at least offensively, you can tell CC is starting to get frustrated as the Yankees are 2-4 in his games and the last 2 games he has pitched pretty well with nothing to show for it. He was cruising along today and had a 1-0 lead early but the Yankees couldn't do anything off of Matt Palmer who is a 30 yr old rookie which says it all right there. This is what gets me about the Yankees offense, they have a bunch of great games where they score a ton of runs and it makes them look better then they are, I still think Kevin Long is terrible and needs to go. A-rod coming back will help them but they have too many days where they are facing guys like today and can't do anything with them. CC is showing signs of improvement, he really hasn't pitched bad at all his last two times out but he still isn't getting the wins and not dominating like he can. The Yankees will try to win the series tomorrow with Phil Hughes on the mound trying to have his 2nd good start in a row. The way the bullpen is going if he keeps pitching well the Joba to the pen talk is going to heat up again.

Chien-Ming Wang pitched 4 hitless innings in extended spring training and they thought he looked good, he will be pitching every fifth day and they will give him at least a couple more starts before they see if they are going to bring him back. A-rod looks ready to come back by Friday when the Yankees go on the road but we will see. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 5:55 PM 0 comments Labels: , , , ,

Yanks/Red Sox Matchups

The Yankees and Red Sox will play a brief 2 game series beginning tomorrow weather permitting. Here are the pitching matchups

Monday- Jon Lester Vs Phil Hughes
Tuesday- Josh Beckett vs Joba Chamberlain

The Yankees said that Hughes and Chamberlain have pitched well and they didn't want to skip them so they just pushed everyone back a day with today's rainout.

The Yankees placed Marte on the DL but he said it is the same problem from spring training that never went away and Brian Bruney said he isn't coming back May 10th that it will be longer, he didn't play catch today and was told not tomorrow either. The Yankees have lost what started out as their 8th inning guys and now they are trying to string it together. I know a lot of people are hoping for this but it is looking more possible that if Hughes continues to pitch well and these guys are injured and the bullpen continues to be bad that Joba will go back to the pen, of course Hughes has to keep it up and Wang has to come back strong so it is still a ways away before it becomes a really good question.

A-rod is expected to go 7 innings tomorrow in the field and he should be back by Friday which will be a real boost to this lineup especially Big Tex who could use his protection. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 11:10 PM 0 comments Labels: , , , ,

Yankees crushed again

The Yankees could not start a winning streak tonight as Phil Hughes just got bombed giving up 8 runs in 1 1/3 innings. Edwar Ramirez came in next and he just isn't any good, you just have to sit fastball or changeup with him and if you guess right you can crush it. I don't understand how you ship Mark Melancon and Dave Robertson back to AAA and have Jose Veras and Edwar Ramirez still on the team. How is Angel Berroa also on the team with Ramiro Pena, just doesn't make much sense. I was wondering and I am sure so was everyone else if you have Alfredo Aceves as the long man why didn't you bring him in tonight and not only after Phil Hughes got bombed but while it was like 4-0 and you still had a chance well guess what Joba Chamberlain popped a blood vessel in his pitching thumb and they don't know if they will need Alfredo Aceves to pitch tomorrow for him therefore they had no choice last night. It is unreal how this team has gone through injuries and had 10 games where they have allowed 10 or more runs. They should have the best starting pitching in the league or one of the best and they just aren't getting it done, I am sure they will get it together soon but will it be too late is the question?? Hopefully Joba will be fine tomorrow pitch a good game, they can score some runs early and hold on and win a series have a good off day and head off to Toronto. The Yankees now have to go on a run and win like 11 out of 16 and this is the time to do it. They are not facing a tough schedule right now and need to take advantage. Posted by Gary W. Minor league weekly roundup

AAA-Scranton- Austin Jackson continues to play well hitting 360 with a 430 obp. Shelly Duncan is on the DL with a sore shoulder but was batting 333 with 10 homeruns and 29 rbi.
John Rodriguez is batting 302 with 6 homeruns and 25 rbi. Juan Miranda is batting 283 with 6 homruns and 24 rbi.

Pitching- We have seen Phil Hughes come up after going 3-0 with a 1.86 era. Ian Kennedy before getting hurt was 1-0 with a 1.59 era. Zachary Kroenke is 3-0 with a 0.60 era, in 15 innings he has 9 strikeouts and walks. Brett Tomko was 1-0 with a 0.64 era as the closer and is now in the majors. Mark Melancon is 2-0 with a 0.75 era and was in the majors but now went back down. Dave Robertson also was in the majors and went back down, he is 0-2 with a 1.74 era.

AA Trenton- Chris Malec is batting 375 with 0 homeruns and 6 rbi's. Jorge Vasquez is batting 308 with 5 homeruns and 19 rbi's. He has only played in 14 games. Colin Curtis is batting 297. Reegie Corona is batting 284.

Pitching- Zach McAllister is 1-1 with a 2.67 era, George Kontos is 1-1 with a 2.66 era. Wilken De La Rosa just got promoted from A and is a guy to watch for- left handed.

A-Tampa- Mitch Hilligoss is batting 326 with 0 homeruns and a rbi. Jesus Montero is batting 302 with 5 homeruns and 18 rbi's. Austin Romine is batting 295 with 2 homeruns and 12 rbi's.

Pitching- Jeremy Bleich is 2-1 with 2.70 era, he has 22 strikeouts in 33 1/3 innings. This guy was drafted out of Stanford and reminds me of Tom Glavine, he could move quickly so keep your eye on him. Dellin Betances is 2-3 with a 3.90 era, he has 34 strikeouts in 32 1/3 innings but also 16 walks, he is one of the top prospects but is only 19 years old. Lance Pendleton is 2-2 with a 3.90 era, he has 23 walks in 32 1/3 innings.

A- Charleston- David Adams is batting 302 with 14 rbi's. Pitching wise Manny Banuelos is 1-0 with a 3.18 era. Andrew Brackman is 0-4 with a 4.55 era. Pat Venditte is 2-1 with a 0.61 era. He is the ambidextrous pitcher. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 10:49 PM 0 comments Labels: , ,

Yanks/Rangers recap

The New York Yankees defeated the Texas Rangers by a score of 11-1 today. Phil Hughes got the start and pitched brilliantly, he went 8 innings giving up 3 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk and 6 strikeouts. He wanted to finish the game but Joe Girardi didn't let him. I have a picture of him above from today's game. He won the WWE belt that for each yankees win whoever the player of the game is gets to keep it for the day. He was wearing it in the postgame interviews and was really proud of it. Alfredo Aceves finished off the game giving up a homerun but then retiring the next 3 batters to finish the game. A-rod always has played great in The Ballpark at Arlington and today was no different as he went 5 for 5, 3 singles and 2 doubles with 4 rbi's. Mark Teixeira had a couple of more hits and a couple of rbi's. Derek Jeter had a hit and a walk, Johnny Damon had a couple of hits and a walk. Robinson Cano had a couple of hits and a couple of rbi's. Melky Cabrera, Nick Swisher and Ramiro Pena all had a hit and Kevin Cash had 3 hits. Everyone in the Yankees lineup had at least one hit and they had the most hits they have had all season with 19. The Yankees will play tomorrow night with Joba Chamberlain on the mound trying to get the Yankees on another winning streak. The only thing I didn't like about today's game was the Red caps the Yankees were forced to wear by MLB for Memorial Day. I just thought they were terrible and the Yankees shouldn't be wearing anything different then usual. I am fine with the flag in the NY but not red caps. Posted by Gary W. Rangers at Yanks the rubber match

The New York Yankees will take on the Texas Rangers this afternoon at 1:00PM on the Yes network. Chien-Ming Wang will get the start in his return to the rotation and will be able to throw about 80 pitches. Phil Hughes will be in the bullpen for the time being and it will be interesting to see how they use him, late innings, long relief, middle relief. It will also be interesting to see who they put in when Wang comes out in the 4th or 5th, 6th if they are lucky. Alfredo Aceves will probably get some innings today and maybe Hughes will also. Here are the pregame notes and lineup via Peter Abraham.

The Yankees are 3-2 versus Texas this year and have won 26 of their last 38 games against them.

The Yankees are 9-3 in their last 12 home games.

It looks like they will get the game in today, there is no rain right now but who knows about delays, we will see.

Yankees lineup:
Damon(LF)
Swisher(RF)
Tex(1B)
A-rod(3B)
Cano(2B)
Matsui(DH)
Cabrera(CF)
Cervelli(C)
Pena(SS) Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 11:13 AM 0 comments Labels: , , , , , , , ,

Yanks take another series

The New York Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Rays by the score of 5-3 today. Andy Pettitte pitched 6 innings giving up 3 runs, he did hit a batter and have 3 walks but he also had 7 strikeouts. Phil Hughes came in to the game in the seventh and looked great pitching a 1-2-3 inning hitting 95 on the gun and showing a good curve. Phil Coke came on in the eighth and had a man on second but survived the inning and Mo went 1-2-3 in the ninth. The Yankees are a full game ahead of the Sox for first place in the AL East heading into the Beantown showdown.

The Yankees offense didn't get many hits but when they did they hit homeruns with 4 of them. Mark Teixeira hit his league leading 18th in the first inning. Nick Swisher has seemed to get his stroke back hit a 2 run homerun, Johnny Damon who loves hitting at home hit a solo homerun and so did Derek Jeter. A-rod didn't get a hit but hit the ball sharply tw16ice at the third baseman. Hideki Matsui is 0 for his last 16 and may need a day off.

A.J. Burnett goes against former teammate Josh Beckett who has righted himself lately tomorrow night at 7 with pre and post game on the Yes network and the game on MY9. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 11:11 PM 0 comments Labels: , , , , , , , ,

Yanks look lifeless again

The New York Yankees continue to lose ground quickly and look like they are just stuck in neutral. They lost 4-0 to the Atlanta Braves tonight and just look lost. They can't hit a lick and I don't know how their hitting coach is still around. Chien-Ming Wang looked better I guess but the bottom line is this he is 0-6 and the team hasn't won any game that he has pitched, i think it is like 0-8 or something like that. The one bright spot continues to be Phil Hughes who came on in relief of Wang and pitched 2 perfect innings with a couple of strikeouts.

A-rod continues to do nothing although he did hit two decent flyballs that if they were in Yankee Stadium may have gone out, i think that is also the problem they hit so many homeruns at home and think they are better because the ballpark plays small and then when they go out on the road they can't hit. This team needs to stop relying on homeruns and just look to get basehits, move runners over and manufacture runs. They have a good pitching staff and should be able to score 4 or 5 runs a game and win most of the games. I really think they need a shakeup and Kevin Long has to be the first one to get fired followed by Dave Eiland. I like Joe Girardi but he is also on the hot seat, I do think he will get the full season but he will be fired if they don't make the playoffs also. They have gone 2-5 against the Nats, Marlins and now Braves against pitchers they have never seen but other then Josh Johnson really aren't that good and they have done absolutely nothing. I don't see how the Steinbrenners or Cashman or whoever is in charge doesn't do something about this, they have fallen 5 games behind the Red Sox and depending on what happens tonight may have lose their lead in the wildcard also. Yanks keep rolling

The New York Yankees defeated the Seattle Mariners tonight by the score of 4-2. Andy Pettitte got the start and pitched great going 7 innings giving up 6 hits and 2 runs with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts. Alfredo Aceves came in to get one out and then Phil Coke got a groundout and strikeout. Mariano Rivera had a 1-2-3 ninth for his 20th save of the year and 502nd of his career. Phil Hughes was warming up but I found it very strange that Alfredo Aceves pitched in the 8th, why not Phil Hughes???

The offense was led by A-rod hitting a 2 run homerun, he also had a single. Mark Teixeira had 2 hits, Derek Jeter had a hit and Johnny Damon had a hit, rbi and walk. Robinson Cano and Nick Swisher each had a hit and Melky Cabrera hit a solo homerun. The Yankees were crisp defensively making no errors. The Yankees are really on a roll now and will look for the sweep tomorrow with CC Sabathia on the mound. Jose Molina is going to start a rehab assignment with Scranton tomorrow. Posted by Gary W. Yanks sweep Tigers

Joba Chamberlain started and finally pitched a really good game going 6 2/3 innings giving up 1 run on 3 hits with 3 walks and 8 strikeouts. Phil Coke came on and threw one pitch and got a pop up to short. Phil Hughes pitched the 8th giving up a single but thats it, he also had 2 more strikeouts and Mo closed out the game. The Yankees won their second consecutive game 2-1.

The offense was led by A-rod who had a couple of hits, one being a solo homerun and Mark Teixeira who also had a solo blast and another hit. Jorge Posada had a hit and that was it for the Yankees offense as Edwin Jackson was the hard luck loser in this one. Joba Chamberlain was throwing 95+ pretty much the whole game and finally had his devastating slider, lets hope this can continue and he can start getting his act together. The Yankees are now 1 game out of first behind the Red Sox who lost 2 in a row to the Blue Jays. The Yankees begin a 3 game series tomorrow with the Baltimore Orioles at the stadium. Yankees finish off strong homstand with a win

The Yankees defeated the Oakland A's today by the score of 7-5 to cap off a 9-1 homestand. Sergio Mitre got the start and only lasted 5 innings giving up 4 runs on 9 hits with 1 strikeout. Phil Coke came on in relief and was shaky giving up 2 hits and a run in his one inning of work. Phil Coke has been so great but it is going to happen and it will really be beneficial to him and the team if Damaso Marte comes back and they can have the two lefties out of the pen. Phil Hughes came on for 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. He gave up a hit and a walk but had 3 strikeouts. He has just been so good you wonder if he will ever let up a run again out of the bullpen. Mariano Rivera also pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief giving up 0 hits and 0 walks with 2 strikeouts. The Yankees pitching has been so good and that is the key to their success, it will be interesting to see what they do, if they add another starter or take Aceves out of the pen and make him a starter again, I don't think they will move Hughes back as he has been so dominant and it would take him time to build back up to starting.

The offense was led by Derek Jeter who went 2-4 with 2 rbi's and a walk. Johnny Damon had a hit and a walk and Big Tex had 2 hits and a rbi. Jorge Posada had a hit and a walk, Hideki Matsui had a hit, walk and rbi. Nick Swisher had a hit and a walk and Robinson Cano had a huge 3 run double. Melky Cabrera had a hit and 2 walks, he has started hitting well again lately and he is once again the CF as Gardner is hurt so this is a good sign. Cody Ransom had 2 hits, everyone in the lineup had at least one hit. The Yankees finished off the homestand at 9-1 which is great and they also are 2 1/2 ahead of the Red Sox as they got that game back they lost yesterday with their win and Bostons loss. The Yankees now begin a huge 9 game roadtrip with 3 in Tampa starting tomorrow, 4 in Chicago and 2 in Toronto. The Yankees will have the Red Sox for 4 games when they return home but lets focus on each series first and not look ahead, hopefully we will remain in first at the end of this roadtrip and go from there. I would accept 5-4 on this roadtrip but 6-3 would be really nice. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 8:15 PM 0 comments Labels: , , , , , , , , ,

Yankees at Jays The New York Yankees take on the Toronto Blue Jays in game 1 of 4 tonight at 7:00PM on the YES network. The Yankees enter the game having won 6 in a row and 23 of their last 29 overall. They are 7 1/2 games ahead of the Boston Red Sox in first place in the AL East and 6 1/2 ahead of the Anaheim Angels for homefield advantage. They are creeping ever closer to clinching the 1 seed in the postseason. Here are the pregame notes and lineup via Peter Abraham and his Lohud Yankees Blog. The Blue Jays were 27-14 on May 18 and in first place by 3 1/2 games. They have gone 32-59 since that point. They have lost 3 straight, 6 of 7 and 14 of their last 18. The Yankees have a run differential of +141 which is the best in the majors but according to the formula they should have 79 wins. Derek Jeter is 9 hits away from breaking Lou Gehrig's hits record. The Yankees have 208 homeruns, at this pace they would hit 253 which would break the franchise record which is 242 by the 2004 team. The major league record is 264 by the 1997 Seattle Mariners. Johnny Damon has a 7 game hitting streak and is now hitting 293. A-rod has hit safely in 11 straight batting 419 during the stretch. He has 11 rbi's and his batting avg has climbed from 254 to 274. Phil Hughes who is the closer for now until Mo comes back has a 1.14 era in 31 relief appearances. In his last 10 outings he has pitched 10 innings giving up 0 runs, 3 walks and 14 strikeouts. I think he could be a dominant reliever but he needs to be a starter next yr and the only thing will be the innings, will it be like Joba this year. The Yankees have outscored their opponents 47-14 in the 6 game winning streak. Derek Jeter is only 3 of his last 13 and Hideki Matsui is 4 of his last 24 with 2 rbi's. Melky Cabrera has broken out of his slump going 10 fo his last 24 and now batting 274. Jon Albaladejo was called up today. Yankees Lineup: Jeter(SS) Damon(LF) Teixeira(1B) Rodriguez(3B) Matsui(DH) Posada(C) Cano(2B) Swisher(RF) Cabrera(CF) Posted by Gary W. Yanks love pie

The New York Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Rays tonight by the score of 3-2. Nick Swisher hit a walkoff homerun in the bottom of the ninth to give the Yankees the victory. Chad Gaudin got the start and pitched really well going 6 strong and then tiring in the seventh. He gave up 1 run on 6 hits with 6 strikeouts. Phil Hughes who has been lights out gave up a solo homerun in the eighth but then Mo had a 1-2-3 ninth to set up the heroics. The Yankees were pretty much shutdown by David Price who was really good tonight showing the promise that he has. Nick Swisher hit a monster homerun to left field and A-rod had a rbi single. Derek Jeter went hitless once again disappointing many people and going through his longest hitless stretch of the season. He is now 0 for his last 13 and did not make himself available to the media after the game. That is very unusual for him so I wonder if it is getting to him a little bit. The Yankees magic number is now 15 and they are 40 games over 500.

David Price became the first pitcher to strike out Jeter 3 times in a game since Curt Shilling did it on April 19, 2004.

Nick Swisher's 2 homeruns were the 3rd time this season he has done it from both sides of the plate.

Johnny Damon reached 100 runs scored for the 10th time in his career.

Dave Robertson will meet with Dr. James Andrews on Thursday in Florida, that is never a good thing. This kid was really coming on this year so lets hope it is nothing too serious.

Chad Gaudin has allowed 4 runs in 14 innings as a starter for the Yanks and they are 3-0 in those games.

Joba Chamberlain will be on the mound tomorrow against Jeff Niemann. The Yankees will go for the 4 game sweep. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 11:08 PM 0 comments Labels: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Yankees Hot Stove action

The New York Yankees have made it clear they are going to take their time this offseason. The Yankees are the World Champions and don't have to rush into anything. Brian Cashman and Joe Girardi both indicated yesterday at the premiere for the World Series DVD that starting pitching is the priority but unless they give up a lot to get a Roy Halladay which I don't think will happen they will sign a middle of the road type starter. They can also sign Chien-Ming Wang for cheap to a incentive laden deal and see what happens. If they don't sign anyone they can go with Joba and Hughes at the backend and is that really the worst thing with Aceves, Mitre, Gaudin, Kennedy all backing them up. I think it would be fine to get another starter but I don't think they are in such bad shape here. If you can have a guy like Gaudin as your 4th or 5th starter with Hughes or Joba and the other in the pen I think you are in really good shape. The Yankees showed this year that you only need 3 strong starters in the postseason and a good bullpen.

There were rumors about the Yankees being interested in Jermaine Dye but the Yankees have shot them down. The Yankees did sign someone today, it was a dominican prospect named Eladio Moronta. He was suspended by baseball for a year earlier this year for lying about his age but that ban has been lifted. He is said to have excellent speed and a strong arm. You can read this article about him on baseball america. I like what the Yankees have done to build up their farm system and this is part of it being strong in the international market. It will be interesting to see this season how Austin Jackson, Francisco Cervelli, Ramiro Pena and some others will be used. I think they could have a big impact on the team and show that the Yankees system does have some talent and they don't just go out and buy players. Posted by Gary W. Joba Rules

The New York Yankees and Joba Chamberlain have gone back and forth between starter and reliever. He was a started last year until the playoffs and stated just the other day he intends on being a starter this season. He was at the Thurman Munson Awards dinner last night and had some things to say. He did state that he wants to be a starter but the Yankees have the final call and if the told him you are going to be a setup man and be ready to inherit MO's job when he retires he would be ready and able to do that. He stated he just wants to be told what to do and then stick with that. Joel Sherman of the NY Post had a article in todays paper about this and stated that Joba is going to be the setup man and Phil Hughes will be the 5th starter. I have been saying this for a while and I agree with it. The thing about Joba is he just seems different out of the pen.

I have been in the Joba as a starter camp and I still believe he can be a very good starting pitcher. The thing though that the Yankees couldn't ignore and most of the fans was that he was sitting at 89-91 as a stater and looked tentative. Joba went back to the pen for the postseason and was back up in the high 90's and just looked dominant again. The Yankees will never admit it publicly but I do think they believe he is better suited for the bullpen now. It is very hard for them because of what they invested for him to be a starter. They went through all this Joba Rules stuff and now finally he is ready to be unleashed this season and what do you know he will most likely end up in the pen. The thing is Phil Hughes will have the rules but the Yankees have Sergio Mitre, Chad Gaudin and some others in the minors to cover the 5th starter role and if there is injury. I think the Yankees best team will be with Joba in the pen and Hughes starting. It will be a debate that will be ongoing but I am sure this is what most people want and will be happy as long as Joba executes in this role the way everyone thinks he will.

Yankees Pre Spring Training Workout

Several of the New York Yankees are down in Tampa for pre spring training workouts at the minor league complex. Curtis Granderson arrived today according to Mark Feinsand of the NY Daily News and he did some fly catching drills today in center with Brett Gardner. Rob Thomson the third base coach was the one running the drills. A. J. Burnett played catch today and Chad Gaudin, Alfredo Aceves, Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes, Boone Logan and Dave Robertson were all spotted today. Curtis Granderson also got in live batting practice with Francisco Cervelli, Derek Jeter and Eduardo Nunez. He said he doesn't care if he is in center or left or where he bats in the lineup. He seems like a great guy and I am sure he is going to fit in just fine with this team. Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes threw bullpen sessions only a few yards away from each other side by side today which is pretty ironic since they will be battling for the 5th starter spots.

The workouts will really get going at George M. Steinbrenner Field on Thursday with pitcher and catchers but on Wed they will all be reporting. Hang in there everyone as the long journey is about to begin, remember to keep checking back as I will have daily coverage of both the New York Yankees and New York Mets as they go through spring training and into the season. Spring Training has arrived

Today is the day that pitchers and catchers report, it is more of a formality then anything else. It brings a sense of joy and spring, as it continues to be cold and snowy in the northeast at least you can look to the fields in Florida and Arizona and think of the upcoming season and know that spring is near. Tomorrow will be the first official workouts and today is a pretty quiet day but there were some quotes and for the Yankees Joe Girardi did meet with the media at noon.

Here are some quotes and some of what the manager had to say courtesy of Chad Jennings of the Journal News and wondeful Lohud Yankees Blog.

Phil Hughes had this to say regarding any change in the clubhouse because the Yankees are the champs for the first time in 9 years. " I don't think it will, last year was nice but we need to do it again. At the end of 2010, I don't think anyone will be thinking about who won it in 2009."

This is the Yankees way and it is so ingrained in them that I wouldn't worry at all about complacency, plus they have enough new faces that didn't win it last year. I think once the Yankees are on top they want to stay there and the whole organization gets more and more hungry.

Here is what Joe Girardi had to say. " The expectation here is the same every year. In a sense you are supposed to repeat every year. I don't really consiser complacency to be an issue because I know the people in the room." I agree with that, you are supposed to win every year as a Yankee and that is a hard thing to do but once they do it and know how to win I think they want it more and more.

Here is some more highlights of his press conference:

He said the # 1 concern in his mind is ironing out the lineup. He said it isn't that I am worried about it because I know guys can do the job but it is where do they all fit in the lineup.

He said there is competition on the pitching staff but he will make it clear that it doesn't start right away. He said his message will be look we are just getting ready now. I think what he is trying to say here is not to go all out and hurt yourself trying to impress the coaches. There is enough time for the competition but lets start out slow and get ready.

Girardi said that he feels comfortable with either Granderson or Gardner in center field and they will both play there and left field in the spring. He said it isn't necessarily who is better as an individual but what combo works the best that will decide left and center.

He said he envisions the loser of the 5th starter battle going to the bullpen. He would like to have that spot determined by March 25th but that isn't set in stone. He also stressed it isn't all about spring statistics.

He said that they are going to do another group outing the day before the first game. He said he has heard suggestions of paintball and bowling. Those ideas made him a little uneasy as he doesn't want to do anything that he feels guys can get hurt at. He said they will continue to talk about it and will decide eventually on doing something. He said he doesn't want anything that involves running through woods or swinging heavy objects. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 1:10 PM 0 comments Labels: , , , , , , , , , , ,

Fridays News and Notes from Tampa

Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes spoke to the media toay and you can hear about 3 minutes from each on the Lohud Yankees Blog. Here is the link http://yankees.lhblogs.com

Andy Pettitte followed the lead of the other starting pitchers and stayed off the mound, he will wait a few days before he revs it up. Here is what he had to say "My bodys feeling good, everything feels good coming into the spring. I feel real good about that." Andy also said the workload of the playoffs shouldn't bother him because the Yankees did a good job at the end of the year of resting their pitchers for the playoffs. He also said he is happy they added another reliable arm and that they never had met before but have already played golf together.

Joe Girardi said you would love to have 2 lefties in a perfect world but they feel their righties get lefties out well. He specifically mentioned Dave Robertson but did say that 2 lefties gives you so many more options.

Yogi Berra was in the clubhouse this morning according to Chad Jennings of the Journal News.

Greg Golson and David Winfree both stopped in the clubhouse today, they are both going to be fighting for a job. It will be interesting to see what happens with guys like this, do they serve as trade bait, the last spot on the bench or go to the minors and add depth.

Joe Girardi said the thing that has jumped out at him this early in camp was a lot of quality arms. He said some of the pitchers are big and intimidating, that he needs a step stool to talk to them.

Here are the pitchers who threw today Joba Chamberlain, Christian Garcia, Phil Hughes and Edwar Ramirez. The second group was Kei Igawa, Mark Melancon, Boone Logan and Mosely. The third group was Zach McAllister, Ivan Nova and Kevin Whelan. The last group was Jeremy Bleich, Hector Noesi, Wilken De La Rosa and Mitchell.

There isn't too much going on but I am going to try and post some pictures over the weekend and the starters are going to start throwing bullpens and then on Wednesday the full squad reports so it will get more interesting. News and Notes from Yankees Camp

Chan Ho Park arrived in camp today, he said he has been throwing in Korea. He long tossed today and will throw a bullpen tomorrow. Edwar Ramirez was designated for assignment to make room on the 40 man roster for Park. The official press release from the Yankees can be found here.

Chan Ho Park will wear number 61. Brian Cashman said they are treating him like today was his first day of spring training, which it was technically. He was throwing bullpens and training in Korea but the Yankees will start his throwing program the same way they did the other pitchers. He will throw a bullpen tommorrow and Cashman said he won't get into a game the first week of exhibition games. That still will give him enough time to be ready for opening day, the Yankees just don't want to rush him and have him get hurt.

Here are the pitchers who threw live batting practice today: Group 1-Joba Chamberlain, CC Sabathia, Phil Hughes,Boone Logan,Zach McAllister,Ivan Nova,Hector Noesi.

Group 2: Kei Igawa,Dustin Moseley,D.J. Mitchell, Mark Melancon,Jeremy Bleich,Kevin Whelan.

CC Sabathia threw 28 pitches today. He faced Mike Rivera,Marcus Thames,Randy Winn and Nick Johnson. He said this "They didn't take many swings, but it is good to have that hitter judge your pitches. It doesn't matter whether they swing or not." He was asked if he is ready to finally pitch in a game and he said " We will see, I feel good though. My bullpens went real well, I get Monday off then throw another bullpen, so I will be fine. I'm looking forward to it. Today definitely helped, getting back going and getting used to facing guys." Yankees Lose To Phillies

The New York Yankees lost to the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 3-2 this afternoon. CC Sabathia got the start and wasn't perfect giving up 2 hits and 2 walks in 2 innings. He didn't give up a run though and was pleased with his first outing. He said April 4th is when it matters and he understands what he has to do to get ready. He said that his delivery was so-so and that he had a couple of times where he fell off the mound and wasn't headed toward the plate. He said he will work on that in his bullpen coming up. Roy Halladay who started for the Phillies was his usual self facing the Yankees. He pitched 2 perfect innings with 3 strikeouts.

Zack Segovia, Zach McAllister, Ivan Nova and Mark Melancon all pitched scoreless innings. Segovia gave up a walk and Melancon gave up a hit but had 2 strikeouts. Romulo Sanchez pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up 2 hits, a run and a walk. Boone Logan pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings and Wilkens Arias blew a save and got the loss pitching 2/3 of an inning giving up 3 hits and 2 runs, he did have a strikeout.

The Yankees offense didn't see anyone get more then a hit. Jaime Hoffman, Jesus Montero, Robinson Cano, Eduardo Nunez, David Winfree, Colin Curtis, Jose Gil and Brandon Laird all had one hit. Colin Curtis is really trying to make a name for himself after hitting a 3 run walkoff homerun yesterday. The rbi's were produced by Jose Gil and David Winfree. Winfree is another one of the outfielders trying to stick as the 5th OF but he is a long shot, Jaime Hoffman is the rule 5 pick who has to make the team and stay on it all year or be offered back to the Dodgers for half the price 25,000. Jorge Posada, Randy Winn and Ramiro Pena all struck out twice.

The Yankees will host the Tampa Bay Rays tomorrow afternoon at 1:00PM with Phil Hughes getting the start. Joba Chamberlain is scheduled to pitch also in this game. The game will be televised on the YES network. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 5:51 PM 0 comments Labels: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Joba not good, Phil Hughes appears to be in the lead

The New York Yankees defeated the Detroit Tigers today in Lakeland. Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes both pitched renewing the 5th starter battle. Joba was not very good giving up 5 hits and 6 runs in 2 1/3. He breezed through the first 2 innings and then ran into trouble in the 3rd. He gave up 4 consecutive hits and a grand slam. He also had 3 walks and a strikeout. Phil Hughes came out of the bullpen and pitched pretty well. He gave up 1 run and 3 hits in 2 2/3 innings with 0 walks and 2 strikeouts. I think the Yankees want Hughes to be the 5th starter and Joba to be in the pen and so far Hughes hasn't done anything to not win the 5th starter job. The interesting thing to me is that Sergio Mitre and Alfredo Aceves are pitching the best, I do think they could also both end up in the pen with Gaudin getting traded but we will see what happens. Jason Hirsh is a darkhorse but he threw another perfect inning today with 2 strikeouts. He has made several appearances without giving up a run and has a bunch of strikouts this spring. Andrew Brackman pitched a inning giving up 2 hits and a run with a strikeout. Grant Duff got the win pitching a scorless inning and giving up a hit. Ryan Pope got the save pitching one inning and giving up a hit but he had 2 strikeouts.

Mark Teixeira had a homerun today, his first of the spring. He finished the day with 2 hits, a rbi and walk. Curtis Granderson has started to get his bat going the last couple of days. He was 2-3 with a walk and rbi in his first appearance against his old team. Johnny Damon did not play for the Tigers as he sat out with turf toe. Greg Golson was 1-2 with 2 rbi, Colin Curtis was 1-2 with a rbi. Jaime Hoffman was 1-2 and Brett Gardner was 1-2 with a walk. David Winfree was 2-2 with a rbi and Mike Rivera was 1-3 with a rbi. Jorge Vazquez was 1-2 with 2 rbi and Reegie Corona was 2-2. The Yankees will take on the Atlanta Braves tomorrow night under the lights in Tampa. A.J. Burnett will get the start against Jair Jurrjens. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 5:10 PM 0 comments Labels: , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Some postgame Yankees Notes

Sam Borden had a interesting post on Joba and Phil Hughes on the Lohud Yankees Blog. If you haven't seen it check it out at http://yankees.lhblogs.com/. He is saying the reason you shouldn't get hung up in spring stats which I for the most part don't do is because there are things you don't know. Joba Chamberlain for instance has been told to work inside this spring so in that bad inning that is all he was doing no matter the results and Phil Hughes has been told work on your changeup and that is what he was doing when he gave up a homerun today. The point is if you say this guy did this and this one did that it doesn't really mean anything because in the season they wouldn't be doing the same thing. The most important thing is for them to stay healthy and get their arm stength up. The Yankees know what they are doing and are going to determine who they feel is the best 5th starter and who belongs in the bullpen. I know there will always be debate but the Yankees are looking at certain things and it isn't just the stats, I have a hunch they want Hughes to be the 5th starter and they know Joba will be good in the 8th inning role and future closer. I think this is how it will wind up and Aceves will fill the role he did last season with Mitre or Gaudin as the longman and the other getting traded or released.

There is also audo of both Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes on the Lohud Yankees blog. I forgot to mention this earlier but the Yankees announced yesterday that they will have a Bowl Game at Yankee Stadium. The game will be held on December 30, 2010 and broadcast on ESPN. It will be called the New Era Pinstriped Bowl.

Joe Girardi mentioned this morning that today will be the last tune up start, after today he will really start juding the pitchers for the 5th starter spot. Joe Girardi has been using a lot of different lineups over the past few days and said sometime towards the end of spring training he would want his regular lineup together for an extended period of time. March 16th is the day after an off day and Girardi said he will have all his regulars playing. That is supposed to be Mariano Riveras first appearance also of the spring.

Andy Pettitte, Javier Vazquez, Damaso Marte and Mariano Rivera all threw in the bullpen today. They stayed behind in Tampa and didn't make the trip. Cervelli caught Pettitte and Alfredo Aceves and I haven't heard otherwise so I am sure it went well and that he should be ready to catch in a game on Friday. Jesus Montero caught Javier Vazquez and Chad Gaudin. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 5:21 PM 0 comments Labels: , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Phil Hughes named 5th Starter

I am sorry that I didn't get to post the lineups or pregame information for today but here is what is going on. Chad Gaudin met with the beat reporters this morning to announce he has been released. Brian Cashman said he tried to trade him but there was no match and if they sent him to AAA they would have had to pay his full salary, right now they only owe him 1/4 of his salary.

Phil Hughes was announced as the fifth starter and will start tomorrow on short rest so he can line up behind Javier Vazquez. Joe Girardi said a key to choosing Hughes was the development of his changeup this spring. They expect his innings limit to be slightly higher then Joba Chamberlains were last season, about 170. There was no announcement on when he will actually make his first start of the season but the Yankees don't need a 5th starter until April 17th and they only need one twice in April, they have every Monday off so this is a way to keep his innings down. There is audio of Joe Girardi today on the Lohud Yankees Blog at http://yankees.lhblogs.com

Not that it matters but Aceves got knocked around pretty good today, he gave up 4 runs and didn't even get through the 3rd inning, he also gave up 6 hits. I will have a lot more later on this afternoon and evening regarding the days events and also the game recap.

Looks can be deceiving

The New York Yankees lost to the Philadelphia Phillies in Clearwater by the score of 9-7. A.J. Burnett got the start and had a horrible first inning, he recovered after that. He ended up throwing 4 innings giving up 5 runs on 7 hits with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts. He gave up all of his runs in the first inning and then threw 3 scoreless after that. This is typical A.J., he can be soo good yet so bad at times and sometimes it is just one inning. Royce Ring faced one batter a lefty and got him out. Phil Hughes who probably could have locked up the 5th starter spot appeared to get roughed up. His line was 4 1/3 innings 5 hits, 4 runs, 0 walks and 6 strikeouts. He gave up a 2 run homerun that was legitimate but he also gave up 2 other solo homeruns that were wind aided. The good thing was 0 walks and 6 strikeouts.

Mark Teixeira led the offense going 4-4 with a 2 run homerun. Brett Gardner had a rbi and Curtis Granderson was 2-3 with a walk and rbi. Nick Swisher had a hit and rbi and Ramiro Pena had 2 hits. Kevin Russo and Eduardo Nunez each had a hit and rbi. The Yankees are off tomorrow.

Here are some notes from today via Chad Jennings of the Journal News. Joe Girardi said that they will be having serious discussions about the 5th starter on Wednesday and then see what their next move is and who will get more innings.

Girardi said he isn't ruling anything out at this point. "We have five guys, we have in a sense one spot in the rotation and three in the bullpen. I can't tell you exactly what is going to happen, we have two weeks to go." There is a couple of audio of Girardi today on the Lohud Yankees Blog.

A.J. Burnett said he threw some good changeups today, he said some got hit but but you keep throwing them. He said it is different, in the season you probably wouldn't keep throwing it but in the spring you can.

Joba Chamberlain said his changeup is getting better and better. He said this is the best changeup he ever had today. He threw 5 innings giving up 6 hits and 2 runs in the intrasquad game today. He had 1 walk and 1 strikeout, he threw 75 pitches, 48 for strikes.

Mariano Rivera got three outs, one of them a strikeout in the intrasquad game. He said "feeling good fellas, feeling good." He is scheduled to pitch again on Wednesday.

Chan Ho Park was brilliant in the intrasquad game. He got 7 outs, 5 of them by strikeout. He only gave up one hit and threw 21 out of 29 pitches for strikes. Joe Girardi said "He did everything we wanted him to do."

Damaso Marte got 4 outs, he got a double play and had 1 walk and 1 strikeout. Dave Robertson also got 4 outs. He struck out 3 and had 1 walk.

Yanks Fall to Astros

The New York Yankees lost to the Houston Astros today by the score of 6-4. Alfredo Aceves got the start and for the first time this spring he struggled. He pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up 5 hits and 5 runs with 1 walk and 2 strikeouts. His numbers do look a little worse then he pitched though. Most of the damage was done at the end of his outing but this clearly was his worst start of the spring. Mark Melancon pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up 2 hits and a run with a strikeout. Boone Logan pitched another scoreless inning, he did give up a hit and he had a strikeout.

Brett Gardner had a couple of hits, one of them was a bunt single. The bunt hit was his 3rd of the spring, he had 2 all of last season. He has been hitting well lately and has his spring average up to 281, if he can hit like that then he will be a starting outfielder on this team. Mark Teixeira had a hit and walk and Alex Rodriguez continues to heat up as he had 2 hits and 2 rbi. Greg Golson and David Winfree each had a hit and Robinson Cano had a hit and rbi. Francisco Cervelli, Jon Weber, Kevin Russo, Ramiro Pena, Mike Rivera and Reid Gorecki all had a hit.

The Yankees will host the Detroit Tigers tomorrow afternoon at 1:00PM on the YES network. Here are some postgame notes from today:

Joe Girardi on the 5th starter competition being such a big topic "I think people are interested that is why, because once that is set, you iron out your bullpen from there. There's a lot kind of up in the air because you don't know who's in your bullpen because of the 5th starter spot. I'm not really suprised by the attention."

The other competition is for the last roster spot and it is between Marcus Thames and Jaime Hoffman and neither is playing well. Hoffman is batting 130 and Thames is hitting 107 this spring. Girardi said they aren't in that big of a hurry to make that decision. The 5th starter should be decided by Friday. The Lohud Blog has audio of Joe Girardi speaking with the media.

A.J. Burnett will start tomorrow with Phil Hughes pitching in relief. Joba will start on Monday with Andy Pettitte pitching in a minor league game. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 9:42 PM 0 comments Labels: , , , , , , , , , , , , ,
