Recap of todays Yankees action
The New York Yankees were defeated by the Detroit Tigers today by a score of 7-4. CC Sabathia started and gave up 5 runs on 6 hits in 1 2/3 innings. He also had 1 walk, I wouldn't get too excited either way with CC, he feels fine and is just getting his work in, he hasn't developed his cutter yet and he is a veteran that knows what it takes to be ready when it counts. Alfredo Aceves vying to be the long reliever pitched 3 1/3 innings giving up 3 hits and 2 runs with 1 walk and 1 strikeout. Brian Bruney pitched a perfect inning with 2 k's and Veras did the same. Mark Melancon continued to impress with 1 inning of scoreless pitching giving up 1 hit. In the spring so far he has pitched 5 innings giving up 3 hits, 1 run but unearned, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. I don't know if he is doing enough to make the team out of spring training but I am confident he will be with the Yankees at some point this season.
On the offensive side Melky Cabrera was 0-3 with a walk, Johnny Damon was 2-2 with a walk. Big Tex was 2-3 with a walk and rbi and Cody Ransom was 1-3 but did have an error. The Yankees get their first off day of the spring tomorrow and will be back at it on Friday.
Edwar Ramirez threw BP today and will pitch on Saturday, MO also threw BP will do so again on Saturday should be in a game on Monday and will go from there, he will be ready come opening day. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 7:27 PM 0 comments

Spring Game 22: Yankees at Astros
So Wang gets the start today and the Astros wont let the Yankees use the DH. This should be bad flashbacks but when Wang gets up there he will not swing or run, hopefully he won't walk, if the pitcher falls behind he better just swing and miss on purpose. The team is coming together nicely but wont be full for a while still with Team USA and Jeter advancing. Arod of course is rehabbing but it has been nice and quiet without him and Cody Ransom is doing a great job filling in so far. Brett Tomko will pitch today and try to continue to impress for the long relief job which suddenly has a new entrant, none other then Kei Igawa who Joe Girardi says you cant help but notice.
UPDATE: The Astros decided to let the Yankees use the DH so Robinson Cano is in there batting second and Wang is off the hook.

Chicago Cubs at New York Yankees set for friday
The pitching matchups for the first 2 games at the New Yankee Stadium are set. These are 2 exhibitions but will be very exciting as everyone will get their first chance to see the New Stadium whether you are there or on TV. The games will be broadcast on the YES network starting friday at 6 with the pregame show followed by the game at 7:00PM and then on Saturday at 1:00PM. I will be attending the Saturday game and will have a writeup about the stadium sometime that evening when I get back home. I am very excited and can't wait to see the new stadium and all that it has to offer.
The pitching matchups are for Fridays game: Ted Lilly vs Chieng-Ming Wang remember gates open at 4:05 for this 7:05 game and for any 7:05 games all season
Saturdays game: Rich Harden vs AJ Burnett and Andy Pettitte, gates open at 10:05 for this 1:05 game and will be like this all season for the 1:05 games. This is a change as the gates used to open 2 hours before the game and now will open 3 hours before the game. I am sure the Yankees can't wait to hop on that plane Wednesday evening and head to NY after this long spring training and although it will be 2 exhibitions it won't feel that way. Posted by Gary W. The season is rescued
I am being funny here but to some they really feel this way. Brian Cashman says around here it is 162 1 game seasons and that is how a lot of fans treat it and even some in the media. The Yankees played a great game today winning by the score of 11-2. AJ Burnett looked good going 5 1/3 innings, 2 runs with 6 strikeouts. Nick Swisher made his first start and had 5 rbi, Robbie Cano continued to be the All Star version having 3 hits a homerun and a couple of rbi's. The bullpen was just pure dominance again with Phil Coke striking out both batters he faced then Jose Veras, Brian Bruney and Mo pitching perfect innings. Mark Teixera had a couple of hits, a homerun and rbi. Ramiro Pena got one at bat and had his first major league hit. The Yankees head to KC now and will play tomorrow afternoon at 4:00pm with Andy Pettitte going against ex teammate Sidney Ponson. Saturday night at 7:00pm Joba will square off against Horacio Ramirez and Sunday afternoon Easter Sunday CC Sabathia will face Gil Meche. I hope the Yankees will take a deep breath now and relax and get at least 2 out of 3 in KC if not sweep them.
I know it is early but I really like what I see out of Nick Swisher so far and think he needs to get some more at bats, I am sure he will be playing tomorrow and if he continues to hit he will keep playing. I do like Xavier Nady but he is more of a free swinger and I also like the fact that Swisher is a switch hitter and just brings a lot of enery to the team.
The Yankees need to get their pitching right and they will be fine, if there pitching keeps them in it they will win because they can score enough runs even without Alex Rodriguez. I fully expect that all the pitchers will get going and be very potent and tough to beat. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 6:32 PM 0 comments

Yankees at Royals
CC Sabathia makes his second start of the year today, trying to improve on his dreadful opening day performance. He worked on a mechanical issue with pitching coach Dave Eiland in his bullpen session and believes he corrected the flaw. It was his footwork especially his front foot, so if he has his fastball command early we will know it should be a much better game from him. CC is 14-10 with a 3.40 era in his career against the Royals, he has started the most games against them in his career. In the last 2 games yankee pitchers have struck out 22 batters, after the first two games we didn't think they would strike anyone out all year, well at least some fatalistic fans thought that. Robinson Cano has a 349 career avg against the Royals the highest he has against any team. He has a 15 game hitting streak dating back to last year and is 4 for 6 against Ramirez who pitches today for the Royals. The Yankees are the only team in the majors without an error but of course Nick Swisher dropped a ball yesterday that should of been an error and Robinson Cano rushed a throw yesterday that could of been an error although that isn't as bad as Swisher not getting an error. Mark Teixera aka Big Tex turns 29 today, Happy Birthday Tex. The Elias Sports Bureau came up with a couple of interesting things. Jorge Posada has caught at least 1 game for 15 straight years. The last person to do that was Johnny Bench with the Reds from 1967-83. Nick Swisher drove in 5 runs on Thursday becoming the first Yankee since Roger Maris in 1960 to drive in 4 or more runs in their first starts with the Yankees. I will be back with the lineups in a little while, the game doesn't start until 7:00pm, the Red Sox vs Angels is the Fox game of the week at 4:00pm. Peter Abraham gets the credit for having this information on his blog at http://yankees.lhblogs.com and much more so check it out. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 2:45 PM 0 comments

Minor league weekly roundup
AAA-Scranton- Austin Jackson continues to play well hitting 360 with a 430 obp. Shelly Duncan is on the DL with a sore shoulder but was batting 333 with 10 homeruns and 29 rbi.
John Rodriguez is batting 302 with 6 homeruns and 25 rbi. Juan Miranda is batting 283 with 6 homruns and 24 rbi.
Pitching- We have seen Phil Hughes come up after going 3-0 with a 1.86 era. Ian Kennedy before getting hurt was 1-0 with a 1.59 era. Zachary Kroenke is 3-0 with a 0.60 era, in 15 innings he has 9 strikeouts and walks. Brett Tomko was 1-0 with a 0.64 era as the closer and is now in the majors. Mark Melancon is 2-0 with a 0.75 era and was in the majors but now went back down. Dave Robertson also was in the majors and went back down, he is 0-2 with a 1.74 era.
AA Trenton- Chris Malec is batting 375 with 0 homeruns and 6 rbi's. Jorge Vasquez is batting 308 with 5 homeruns and 19 rbi's. He has only played in 14 games. Colin Curtis is batting 297. Reegie Corona is batting 284.
Pitching- Zach McAllister is 1-1 with a 2.67 era, George Kontos is 1-1 with a 2.66 era. Wilken De La Rosa just got promoted from A and is a guy to watch for- left handed.

Pitching- Jeremy Bleich is 2-1 with 2.70 era, he has 22 strikeouts in 33 1/3 innings. This guy was drafted out of Stanford and reminds me of Tom Glavine, he could move quickly so keep your eye on him. Weekly look at the Yankees Minors
AAA-Scranton- They are 26-11 in first place by 4.5 games. Kevin Russo is batting 449, they like this guy and are trying to turn him into a super utility player. Austin Jackson is hitting 342, he doesn't have a homerun and has 13 rbi's. The power is usually the last to come but he is a great athlete and has done a good job in AAA so far and could be with the Yankees at the end of the year or next year. Shelly Duncan is the big power guy down there batting 313 with 11 homeruns and 32 rbi's. I wonder if he may get a shot again at some point, I don't think they will keep Angel Berroa and Ramiro Pena both around forever. Juan Miranda and John Rodriguez both have 6 homeruns. Juan Miranda really doesn't have a place since he plays 1b and Tex is here now for a long time and John Rodriguez is another guy like Shelly Duncan but we will see what the Yankees do.
Pitching wise Kei Igawa started bad but is pitching well going 3-0 with a 3.70 era. He has pitched 41 1/3 innings giving up 36 hits with 8 walks and 25 strikeouts. I wonder if someone will want him if he puts up another good year in AAA because this guy won't sniff NY again. Casey Fossum has pitched well since being claimed off waivers for them, he has a 1.78 era in 5 games. Zachary Kroenke is lights out going 3-0 with a 1.08 era, he has pitched 16.2 innings giving up 10 hits, 10 walks and 10 strikeouts. Mark Melancon is 2-0 with a 0.66 era and Dave Robertson is 0-2 but has a 1.54 era.
AA-Trenton- Trenton is 16-18 on the year 3 games out of first place. Jorge Vasquez a prospect they signed out of Mexico is hitting 329 with 6 homeruns and 26 rbi's. Colin Curtis is batting 291. Reegie Corona is batting 282.
Pitchers- Zach McAllister is 2-1 with a 2.38 era. He has pitched 34 innings with 12 walks and 22 strikeouts. George Kontos was pitching well here and just got promoted to AAA, I will wait a little longer to see how he does there. Wilkins Arias is 0-1 with a 2.95 era, Wilkin De La Rosa is 1-0 with a 2.45 era. He has thrown 11 innings giving up 12 hits with 4 walks and 16 strikeouts. He was pitching so well in A they bumped him up to AA.
A-Tampa- The tampa Yankees are 15-21 in last place 9.5 games out of first. Jesus Montero is one of the Yankees brightest prospects he is hitting 318 with 5 homeruns and 25 rbi's, he is a catcher. Austin Romine another catcher is hitting 275 with 3 homeruns and 16 rbi's. Mitch Hilligoss is hitting 316. Austin Krum is hitting 284, he is an outfielder that was drafted last year.
Pitchers- Jeremy Bleich is 2-2 with 3.13 era. He has pitched 46 innings giving up 41 hits with 15 walks and 31 strikeouts. Dellin Betances one of the other Yankees top prospect is 2-3 with a 4.19 era. He has pitched 38.2 innings giving up 41 hits with 20 walks and 39 strikeouts.
A-Charleston- They are 20-17 and 1.5 games out of first. David Adams is batting 291 with 16 rbi's. Corbin Joseph is batting 321.
Pitchers- Manny Banuelos is 1-1 with a 3.38 era. He has pitched 26.2 innings giving up 24 hits with 9 walks and 31 strikeouts. Andrew Brackman is 0-4 with a 4.01 era, he has pitched 42.2 innings giving up 42 hits with 17 walks and 40 strikeouts. Pat Venditte is 2-1 with a 1.06 era. He has pitched 17 innings giving up 13 hits with 1 walk and 26 strikeouts. He has 10 saves. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 10:00 PM 0 comments

Yankees sweep away the Twins
Andy Pettitte started and didn't have much but gutted his way through 6 2/3 innings giving up 4 runs on 12 hits. Jose Veras somehow after a walk to load the bases got the final out of the seventh on a pop fly and Coke got a big out in the eighth by striking out Morneau and then got the save since MO was resting.
The offense was led by Mark Teixeira who hit 2 homeruns, one righty and one lefty for the second time this year. A-rod had a homerun going back to back with Tex in the 1st and also had a walk. A-rod has had a homerun in 3 straight games now. Derek Jeter had 2 hits and so did Francisco Cervelli who also had a sac bunt. Cervelli has really impressed me, he has been great defensively but has also hit which is a suprise. The Yankees really showed off the leather tonight as well with a couple great plays by Cano, Tex as always was good and Pena made a really nice play at third. The Yankees will open up a three game series with the Baltimore Orioles tomorrow and try to stretch the winning streak to seven games. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 11:21 PM 0 comments

Some Yankees News
Brian Bruney will be activated tomorrow and go back to his eighth inning role. We will see what happens when he comes back, Edwar Ramirez, Jon Albaladejo and Alfredo Aceves have options left, my guess would be Edwar unless of course they get rid of Angel Berroa. Bruney said he got hurt during that game with Posada having that homerun review that took 8 1/2 minutes he said he was warming up and kept doing so because he didn't know how long it would take. He talked to the union about the incident but was told it is a central office that does the reviewing not the umpires on field. He said 8 1/2 minutes is a long time for someone to be throwing is obviously very upset about that incident.
Chien-Ming Wang will be at the Stadium tomorrow to throw a bullpen in front of Yankees personnel. Girardi was non commital about when he might return but the Yankees would like to see his sinker be a little sharper then it was in his last outing, the velocity was down a little but Girardi said he is more concerned with the quality of his sinker. I am going to assume Phil Hughes will go down and Wang will slot in at the end of the week but what happens if Wang still isn't good so maybe they will keep Hughes around for the time being.
Brett Gardner is day to day with a contusion of his right rotator cuff, he said he didn't feel anything after the collision with Joe Mauer yesterday but woke up with pain.

Pitching matchups for Baltimore series
Tonight- CC Sabathia vs Brad Bergesen
Tomorrow- Phil Hughes vs Jeremy Guthrie
Friday- A.J. Burnett vs Brett Myers
The games are all at 7:05PM tonight and Thursday on MY 9 and tomorrow on Yes network.
Brian Bruney will be activated and the question is who gets sent out for him. I really want Angel Berroa off the team but I have a feeling it may be Aceves, if not Berroa it should be Edwar Ramirez or Jose Veras. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 1:15 PM 0 comments

Yanks/Rangers recap

The New York Yankees defeated the Texas Rangers by a score of 11-1 today. Phil Hughes got the start and pitched brilliantly, he went 8 innings giving up 3 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk and 6 strikeouts. He wanted to finish the game but Joe Girardi didn't let him. I have a picture of him above from today's game. He won the WWE belt that for each yankees win whoever the player of the game is gets to keep it for the day. He was wearing it in the postgame interviews and was really proud of it. Alfredo Aceves finished off the game giving up a homerun but then retiring the next 3 batters to finish the game. A-rod always has played great in The Ballpark at Arlington and today was no different as he went 5 for 5, 3 singles and 2 doubles with 4 rbi's. Mark Teixeira had a couple of more hits and a couple of rbi's. Derek Jeter had a hit and a walk, Johnny Damon had a couple of hits and a walk. Robinson Cano had a couple of hits and a couple of rbi's. Melky Cabrera, Nick Swisher and Ramiro Pena all had a hit and Kevin Cash had 3 hits. Everyone in the Yankees lineup had at least one hit and they had the most hits they have had all season with 19. The Yankees will play tomorrow night with Joba Chamberlain on the mound trying to get the Yankees on another winning streak. The only thing I didn't like about today's game was the Red caps the Yankees were forced to wear by MLB for Memorial Day. I just thought they were terrible and the Yankees shouldn't be wearing anything different then usual. I am fine with the flag in the NY but not red caps. Posted by Gary W. Yanks/Rangers recap
The New York Yankees defeated the Texas Rangers 9-2 tonight. They won the series two games to one. A.J. Burnett got the start going 6 shutout innings with 3 hits, 4 walks and 7 strikeouts. Jose Veras gave up a couple of runs, Dave Robertson got the two guys he saw out and Chien-Ming Wang threw two perfect innings. Chien-Ming Wang looked very good tonight which was a great sign.
Mark Teixeira had a 2 run homerun to get them started in the first inning. Hideki Matsui hit two homeruns, Derek Jeter had 3 hits and 2 walks, A-rod had a hit, Brett Gardner had a couple of hits as well as Kevin Cash. Robinson Cano hit a homerun, everyone got into the act offensively and the Yankees moved into a first place tie with Boston. The Yankees also have the best record on the road in the AL and will enjoy their day off tomorrow before playing in Cleveland for four games in a weekend wraparound series.
The Yankees also got good news before the game with the news that Jorge Posada will rejoin the team on Friday and Brian Bruney has no structural damage according to Dr. James Andrews. I am sure Bruney will be out for at least a couple of weeks maybe up to 3 weeks which is ok if he comes back and stays healthy the rest of the year. Melky Cabrera is also ok and may miss up to a week. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 12:19 AM 0 comments

Pitching Matchups for Yanks/Cleveland Series
Friday- Andy Pettitte vs Cliff Lee- A battle of two good lefties. Cliff Lee is only 2-5 but is sporting a 3.04 era. The game is at 7:00 on the YES network.
Saturday- CC Sabathia vs Fausto Carmona. CC makes his return to Cleveland and I am sure he will be cheered but who knows. What happend to Carmona this guy went from great looking kid to struggling very quickly. The game is at 7:00 on the Yes network.
Sunday- Phil Hughes vs Carl "American Idle" Pavano. The Yankees need to rough up the former Yankee as he had his way with them earlier in the year even though they won the game. Phil will try and continue his winning ways. The game is on at 12:40 on the Yes network and TBS.
Monday- Joba Chamberlain vs TBA. The game is at 7:00 on the YES network. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 6:50 PM 0 comments

Yanks/Rangers recap
The Yankees defeated the Texas Rangers by the score of 8-6 today. Chien-Ming Wang got the start and looked good in his first 2 innings but then gave up 5 runs in the next 2 2/3 innings. He gave up 7 hits with a walk and 5 strikeouts. It was better but I wouldn't call it good at all. His next start will be on Tuesday in Boston which could be bad as he has always struggled with Boston. The Yankees offense picked Wang up though with Melky Cabrera hitting a game winning 2 run homerun in the 8th inning.
Mark Teixeira had a couple of hits and 3 rbi's and A-rod had a rbi single. Robinson Cano had a hit and a walk, Cervelli and Pena had a hit each. Johnny Damon led off the game with a homerun and also had a walk. Nick Swisher had 2 hits and a rbi. Dave Robertson got the winning by getting one batter out. Alfredo Aceves gave up one run in 1 2/3 innings and Phil Coke was impressive in 1 1/3 getting 2 strikeouts with no hits or walks. MO got the save in the ninth after giving up a couple of hits. The New York Yankees will take on the Tampa Bay Rays in a 4 game wraparound series beginning tomorrow night at the stadium. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 6:56 PM 0 comments

Pitching matchups for Red Sox series
Tomorrow- A.J. Burnett vs Josh Beckett
Wednesday- Chien-Ming Wang vs Tim Wakefield
Thursday- CC Sabathia vs Brad Penny
Tomorrow is a battle of ex teammates and a game earlier in the year where the Yanks were winning 6-0 and A.J. gave it up and the Yankees got blown out. Wednesday Wang would like to get back on track and Wakefield is hit or miss, he is either very good or can get hit. Thursday the Yankees seem to have the advantage. It would be nice for the Yankees to take 2 out of 3 and leave Boston with a 2 game lead in the division and then head hom for the Subway series. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 11:34 PM 0 comments

Yanks take Subway Series
The Yankees wrapped up the Yankee Stadium portion of the Subway Series with a nice tidy 15-0 blowout. A.J. Burnett got the start and really needed this one going 7 shutout innings with 4 hits, 4 walks and 8 strikeouts. There really is no point in going all through this game but there are a few things to talk about and also some facts and figures.
I want to talk about Francisco Cervelli, what a great job he has been doing. He calls a great game and is excellent defensively but he also had 3 hits and has been a pleasant suprise offensively. I odn't want to start anything yet but there seems to be a big difference when Posada or Cervelli catches. A.J. Burnett may have pitched his best game of the year with Cervelli, we know CC has been pitching well with Cervelli. If anything Cervelli has made sure he isn't going anywhere and will be the backup next year and I have a feeling we will see more of Jorge Posada as the DH.
This was the largest shutout for the Yankees since Sept 25, 1977 against Toronto.
The Yankees have won 14 of their last 19 at home.
This was A.J. Burnetts longest scoreless outing since last June 28th, hopefully this will turn it around last year, he did have a huge second half last year.
Hideki Matsui has hit 10 of his 16 homeruns against lefties.
This was the largest margin ever in a Subway series game.
Johan Santana allowed more runs then he ever has before go figure since they couldn't hit Nieve yesterday who is a no name.
I am sure you all saw the before game incident with K-rod and Bruney. It appears to be over as Bruney said it is over and there is nothing else to say and K-rod wouldn't comment. K-rod approached him and was really going at him before Pelfrey and Jose Veras came in to push him away. Now we know why Veras is on the team. I really thought this whole thing was dumb and am glad it is over, Bruney just needs to come back stay healthy and help solidify the bullpen. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 8:08 PM 0 comments

itching Matchups for Subway Series Part II Tonight- CC Sabathia vs Mike Pelfrey
Tomorrow- A.J. Burnett vs Tim Redding
Sunday- Chien-Ming Wang vs Livan Hernandez
The games are all night games with Sunday night being a ESPN game, tonight is a MY9 game and tomorrow a YES game. The Yankees clearly have the advantage in the pitching matchups and should win 2 out of 3 if not sweep them. The Yankees bats have seem to awoken the last game and a half in Atlanta and if this is the case the Mets could be in for a long weekend as none of the pitchers going are too good. The Yankees catch a break by missing Santana although they did crush him in the first game they saw him this year. I wouldn't of expected that again though if he faced them. Mike Pelfrey has really been struggling lately and Tim Redding just picked up his first win the other day. Livan Hernandez has pitched well this year but he doesn't have great stuff and puts a lot of runners on base. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 12:26 PM 0 comments

Yankees win again
The New York Yankees beat the New York Mets tonight by the score of 5-0. A.J. Burnett got the start and pitched 7 dominating innings allowing 1 hit with 3 walks and 10 strikeouts. Brian Bruney and Dave Robertson finished it off with 2 perfect innings to give the Yankees the 1 hit shutout. A.J. Burnett has really turned it around now and pitched 20 1/3 innings in his last 3 starts with 10 hits, one earned run, 10 walks and 26 strikeouts. CC Sabathia has pitched like an ace and the Yankees probably have the best 1-2 punch in baseball. If they could just get Wang going and have a good third starter they would really be in business.
Offensively A-rod had a rbi single, Nick Swisher had a solo homerun and Jorge Posada had a 3 run homerun. Mark Teixiera had a booming double and Ramiro Pena had another double. The Yankees offense has been on a roll and will see if they can keep it going against Livan Hernandez tomorrow. The only problem for the Yankees is the flu bug running around. Johnny Damon and Derek Jeter have it and Phil Hughes caught a touch of it also. The Yankees have to take it day by day and see how everyone is feeling but hopefully tomorrow Jeter will get back in the lineup. I hope Hughes is ok because they may need him to pitch behind Wang tomorrow. The Yankees will try and get the sweep tomorrow night at 8. The game is on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball. I will have Citi Field Observations tomorrow with some pics. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 11:14 PM 0 comments

Yanks keep rolling
The New York Yankees defeated the Seattle Mariners tonight by the score of 4-2. Andy Pettitte got the start and pitched great going 7 innings giving up 6 hits and 2 runs with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts. Alfredo Aceves came in to get one out and then Phil Coke got a groundout and strikeout. Mariano Rivera had a 1-2-3 ninth for his 20th save of the year and 502nd of his career. Phil Hughes was warming up but I found it very strange that Alfredo Aceves pitched in the 8th, why not Phil Hughes???
The offense was led by A-rod hitting a 2 run homerun, he also had a single. Mark Teixeira had 2 hits, Derek Jeter had a hit and Johnny Damon had a hit, rbi and walk. Robinson Cano and Nick Swisher each had a hit and Melky Cabrera hit a solo homerun. The Yankees were crisp defensively making no errors. The Yankees are really on a roll now and will look for the sweep tomorrow with CC Sabathia on the mound. Jose Molina is going to start a rehab assignment with Scranton tomorrow. Posted by Gary W. Tomorrow- Andy Pettitte vs David Hernandez
Tuesday- Sergio Mitre vs Rich Hill
Wednesday- A.J. Burnett vs Jason Berken
I don't think the Yankees have ever seen any of these guys but they aren't the best pitchers in the world and the Yankees are at home. I would love to see the Yankees sweep them also but they need to take at least 2 out of 3. It will be interesting to see Mitre on Tuesday and if the Yankees could catch lightning in a bottle and not have to make a trade. Andy Pettitte will try and have a strong second half unlike last year, but he usually does and A.J. Burnett battled in his first start after the break but will be looking to put together a better outing and also have another strong second half like he did last year. Posted by Gary W. Yanks win 8th in a row
The New York Yankees defeated the Oakland A's tonight by the score of 8-3. Joba Chamberlain got the start and had his second straight good outing since the break. He went 7+ innings giving up 2 hits, 1 run, 3 walks and 6 strikeouts. Phil Coke was good in the 8th as he got out of a 1st and 2nd no out jam without allowing a run. Dave Robertson pitched the ninth, he gave up a couple of runs but got the job done as he finished the game.
The offense was led by Derek Jeter going 3-5, Jorge Posada had a solo homerun and Melky Cabrera also had 3 hits. A-rod had a double. The Yankees have really been doing the little things like moving runners over and hitting sac flys, taking walks and getting clutch hits. They aren't just hitting homeruns anymore which is a great sign. The Yankees will try and make it 9 in a row tomorrow with Andy Pettitte on the mound. The Yankees remain 2 1/2 up on the Red Sox in first place in the AL East and the best record in the AL. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 11:24 PM 0 comments

Yanks winning streak ends at 8
The New York Yankees lost to the Oakland A's today by the score of 6-4 ending their 8 game winning streak. Andy Pettitte got the start and was great through 6 innings, he ran into trouble in the 7th when he left with the bases loaded and the score tied at 1. Alfredo Aceves came in and got a popup and then had a 0-2 count but gave up a 2 run single and then proceeded to give up 3 more runs after that. The Yankees offense was nonexistent other then a Brett Gardner rbi triple until the 8th inning when Derek Jeter hit a 2 run homerun and Big Tex added a solo homerun. The Yankees had 1st and 2nd with no outs in the ninth but Jorge Posada grounded into a double play and Derek Jeter flew out to end the game. The Yankees will try and start a new winning streak tomorrow with Sergio Mitre on the mound, they also want to win this series before heading out on the road to face Tampa for 3, Chicago for 3 and Toronto for 2 and then coming home for 4 HUGE games against the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees after tomorrows game have a rough stretch and we will see how they react to that.
Derek Jeter tied Bernie Williams for 5th on the alltime Yankees list in games played, next up is Babe Ruth who he will pass in 9 more games. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 10:13 PM 0 comments

Yankees finish off strong homstand with a win
The Yankees defeated the Oakland A's today by the score of 7-5 to cap off a 9-1 homestand. Sergio Mitre got the start and only lasted 5 innings giving up 4 runs on 9 hits with 1 strikeout. Phil Coke came on in relief and was shaky giving up 2 hits and a run in his one inning of work. Phil Coke has been so great but it is going to happen and it will really be beneficial to him and the team if Damaso Marte comes back and they can have the two lefties out of the pen. Phil Hughes came on for 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. He gave up a hit and a walk but had 3 strikeouts. He has just been so good you wonder if he will ever let up a run again out of the bullpen. Mariano Rivera also pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief giving up 0 hits and 0 walks with 2 strikeouts. The Yankees pitching has been so good and that is the key to their success, it will be interesting to see what they do, if they add another starter or take Aceves out of the pen and make him a starter again, I don't think they will move Hughes back as he has been so dominant and it would take him time to build back up to starting.
The offense was led by Derek Jeter who went 2-4 with 2 rbi's and a walk. Johnny Damon had a hit and a walk and Big Tex had 2 hits and a rbi. Jorge Posada had a hit and a walk, Hideki Matsui had a hit, walk and rbi. Nick Swisher had a hit and a walk and Robinson Cano had a huge 3 run double. Melky Cabrera had a hit and 2 walks, he has started hitting well again lately and he is once again the CF as Gardner is hurt so this is a good sign. Cody Ransom had 2 hits, everyone in the lineup had at least one hit. The Yankees finished off the homestand at 9-1 which is great and they also are 2 1/2 ahead of the Red Sox as they got that game back they lost yesterday with their win and Bostons loss. The Yankees now begin a huge 9 game roadtrip with 3 in Tampa starting tomorrow, 4 in Chicago and 2 in Toronto. The Yankees will have the Red Sox for 4 games when they return home but lets focus on each series first and not look ahead, hopefully we will remain in first at the end of this roadtrip and go from there. I would accept 5-4 on this roadtrip but 6-3 would be really nice. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 8:15 PM 0 comments

Yanks beat Halladay and the Jays
The New York Yankees defeated the Toronto Blue Jays by the score of 5-3 tonight. Roy Halladay started for the Jays and you figured it would be a tough night but the Yankees jumped him for 2 runs early and then after settling in they hit 3 solo homeruns late off of him. Johnny Damon and Mark Teixeira went back to back in the 8th and Matsui hit one in the ninth. Andy Pettitte was good again although more balls were hit hard today and he did have an inning where he struggled with his control walking a couple. He ended up pitching 6 2/3 giving up 1 run with 4 walks and 6 strikeouts. Phil Hughes got the last out in the seventh and after giving up back to back singles to start the 8th he struck out the next two and gave way to MO. Mariano was not sharp at all tonight giving up a 2 run double before escaping. Then in the ninth he gave up another bloop hit and got away with a hanger to Bautista who hit the ball to dead center, if he hit it anywhere else it is a tie game. He was down in the count 0-2 to the final hitter and he popped up on another bad pitch.
The Yankees offensively hit 3 homeruns for the second time in a row off of Roy Halladay, I guess they finally have him figured out. Big Tex, Hideki Matsui and Johnny Damon had solo homeruns. Robinson Cano had 2 hits, A-rod and Big Tex each had 2 hits and a rbi. Tomorrow they will face a guy whose name I can't say and can't spell so I don't think the Yankees have ever seen him and Sergio Mitre may be making his final start for the Yankees. I would think the Yankees have to score some runs to win this game but we will see what happens. If they win they will be in first place to start the big 4 game series with the Red Sox. As I am writing this the Sox and Rays are tied in the bottom of the 10th inning. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 10:40 PM 0 comments

Yanks/Bosox Pitching Matchups
Tonight-Joba Chamberlain vs John Smoltz
Tomorrow- A.J. Burnett vs Josh Beckett
Saturday- CC Sabathia vs Clay Bucholz
Sunday- Andy Pettitte vs Jon Lester
I think the Yankees can win 3 out of 4, they need to win tonight, tomorrow is a great matchup. They should win with CC, he really needs to step up and get it done and then Sunday is a tossup game also. This should be a great series but the yankees are home and need to take care of business and up their lead to 4 1/2. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 1:17 PM 0 comments

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees
The Yankees will try and beat the Red Sox for the first time this season and tonight may be their best chance. Joba is flying high pitching the best he has in his career as a starter and John Smoltz looks old and washed up. I think this is the most important game of the series as the Yankees need to stop hearing about how they can't beat the Sox. Here are the pregame notes and lineup via the Lohud Yankees Blog.
Joba is 3-0 with a 0.83 era since the all star break. He has allowed 8 hits over 21 2/3 innings with 8 walks and 19 strikeouts.
Joba is 2-1 with a 3.49 era in his career against the Sox.
Joba as a starter in his career is 10-3 with a 3.27 era. The debate will never end but this is where he belongs in my opinion, he will get better and better and has the potential to be a #1 starter.
The Yankees have won 14 of 19 and 25 of their last 35.
The Red Sox are 7-10 since July 17 and 24-20 since June 13th.
MO has gone 19 1/3 innings without allowing a run. He has 18 strikeouts in that time.
Nick Swisher is heating up going 11 for his last 34 with 6 xbh.
Johnny Damon is 10 of his last 22 with 2 homeruns and 6 rbi's.
A-rod is way overdue going 61 at bats without a homerun which is the longest of his Yankees career.

Yanks beat Sox again
The New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox this afternoon by the score of 5-0. CC Sabathia dominated for 7 2/3 innings giving up 0 runs on 2 hits with 2 walks and 9 strikeouts. Phil Hughes came in and struck out the only guy he faced and David Robertson finished off the shutout in the ninth giving up a couple of hits but striking out Big Papi to end the game. A.J. Burnett and CC Sabathia were signed over the winter for moments like this and they really stepped it up this weekend pitching brilliantly and earning there pinstripes, you can envision them both pitching well the rest of the way and into the playoffs. There is one game tomorrow but the Yankees have stepped up and shut the critics up and proved that right now they are the best team in the AL east. The offense hasn't been too good the last couple of days but they have done enough to win.
Robinson Cano was the only Yankee with multiple hits today going 3 for 4, Derek Jeter had a 2 run homerun for his only hit. Johnny Damon, Mark Teixeira, Hideki Matsui, Melky Cabrera and Jose Molina had a hit each. The bottom line is this the Yankees want to win a championship and to do that they need pitching and defense and just enough hitting and right now they are doing all of that, a lot of people have been saying they can't beat the good teams but I don't think they are saying that anymore. Andy Pettitte will be on the mound tomorrow against Jon Lester which will be a tough game but the Yankees have it set up for Pettitte to go 6 innings and then they can turn it over to Phil Hughes, Phil Coke, Mariano Rivera and hope to sweep the Red Sox and leave them 6 1/2 games out and maybe knock them out of the wildcard for now.
A couple of quick notes, Josh Towers was on the team today, he will be gone tomorrow when they put Chad Gaudin on the roster. Gaudin will be out of the bullpen for now but I expect him to be starting pretty soon although they can have him caddy with Sergio Mitre. The reason Josh Towers was brought up today is just in case CC had to leave the game early or they went to extra innings again, they would of been in trouble and he would of been a guy who could give them length. The Red Sox were shutout in back to back games for the first time since 2002. They are now under 500 on the road and really reeling. The Yankees are 12-1 in their last 13 home games. These 3 games Yankee stadium has been sold out and really rocking like the old stadium, it still isn't the old stadium but this was a huge step in the right direction. Posted by Gary W. A-rod hits 2 run walkoff in Classic game
I have managed to stay up for this great game. I am not going to do the statistics like I usually do. The pitching was the name of the game tonight for both teams, A.J. Burnett and Josh Beckett were just brilliant, A.J. gave up 1 hit in 7 2/3 innings and Beckett gave up 3 hits in 7 innings. The bullpens were equally brilliant as both teams pretty much used everyone. The Yankees have had a few chances but couldn't get the one big hit.
Ok as I am writing this A-rod hits a 2 run walkoff homerun. He said it best everyone is exhausted including me so I am going to go to bed while watching the post game and will be back tomorrow with more. This was some game and now the yankees have a 4 1/2 game lead and can really stomp on the Sox, this has to be crushing for them as they used their whole pen that was already tired and they have Clay Bucholz going tomorrow. CC needs to come up big and get the Yanks a win and a chance for a 4 game sweep. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 12:32 AM 0 comments

Blue Jays at Yankees
The New York Yankees will take on the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2nd of 3 from Yankees stadium. The game is at 7:05 on MY9 in NY. The Yankees are 4-1 on their current seven game homestand. Joba is the starter tonight and was shaky his last time out against the Red Sox but he pitched 3 great games in a row before that and is 8-0 with a 1.79 era in his career after the all star break. Melky Cabrera turns 25 today, Happy Birthday to him.

Yanks lose don't get the sweep
The New York Yankees lost to the Seattle Mariners today by the score of 10-3. Joba Chamberlain got the start and wasn't very good only going 5 innings and giving up 4 runs on 7 hits. Alfredo Aceves came on in relief in the sixth and ended up pitching 1 2/3 innings giving up 4 runs on 4 hits with a couple of strikeouts. Chad Gaudin pitched 1 1/3 giving up 4 hits and 2 runs. It wasn't a very good day for the pitchers who have been so good lately especially the bullpen. Chad Gaudin is still in line to pitch Wednesday. The Yankees did win 3 out of 4 in Seattle and will head off to Oakland to play 3 starting tomorrow night.
The story of the day and the good news from this game was Derek Jeter getting 3 hits and setting the all time record for most hits as a SS. A-rod, Swisher, Hinske, Pena and Cano all had one hit a piece. Doug Fister the starting pitcher for the Mariners had the Yankees offense off balance all day and they really didn't muster much. Hideki Matsui was out of the lineup and had fluid drained during the game and will miss tomorrow and then be day to day. The Boston Red Sox lost today so the Yankees lead remains at 7 1/2 in the AL east, Boston also is now 1/2 game behind the Texas Rangers for the wildcard lead. Posted by Gary W. CC looking like an Ace
The New York Yankees defeated the Oakland A's 7-2 last night in a sloppy game for the A's. CC Sabathia pitched very well going 8 innings with 5 hits, 2 walks and 7 strikeouts. He gave up two solo homeruns early and then was in trouble in the 4th with two men on and one out but got out of it and then went into full lockdown mode, only one guy reached base the rest of the game. CC Sabathia is now 4-0 this month with a 2+ era. David Robertson pitched a scoreless ninth walking a couple of guys but then not giving anything else up. CC Sabathia earlier in the year was struggling and a lot of people were worried but he sure looks like an Ace now and he said he would get better as the season wore on and that is what you want.
The offense was once again led by the Captain Derek Jeter who had 3 hits for the 3rd straight game. Johnny Damon had a couple of hits and a rbi, A-rod had a hit, rbi and 2 walks. Hideki Matsui had a couple of hits, rbi and walk. Jorge Posada had a hit and 2 rbi's and Melky Cabrera had a couple of hits. The Yankees will try and win the series tonight before heading to Boston and enjoying a day off tomorrow before the big 3 game series starting Friday night. Posted by Gary W. Yanks smack Boston around
The New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox tonight at Fenway Park by the score of 20-11. They have now won 5 in a row over Boston and have a 7 1/2 game lead in the AL East. The Yankees have now also got the monkey off their back of not winning in Boston this season. Andy Pettitte got the start and wasn't great, he went 5 innings giving up 7 hits and 7 runs, 5 of them earned with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. Brian Bruney pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up 1 hit and 3 walks. Damaso Marte returned from the DL and got both guys he faced out, one on a strikeout. Damaso Marte if good can be a very useful piece for the Yankees as he would be the 2nd lefty out of the pen. Sergio Mitre finished off the game with 2 innings giving up 4 runs on 4 hits.
The offense had many stars, everyone had at least one hit and the only guy not to have multiple hits was Robinson Cano. Hideki Matsui was the offensive star though with 2 homeruns and 7 rbi's. Derek Jeter had 3 more hits to continue being the hottest hitter in baseball. A-rod broke out of his slump with 4 hits. The Yankees will take the win but it wasn't the pretties game, they made some mistakes and didn't get good pitching. The Yankees will send A.J. Burnett to the hill tomorrow to face Junichi Tazawa which is a mismatch, the Yankees also have their big bullpen guys ready to go since they saved them all tonight. Posted by Gary W. Joba rules part II
The plan has been in place since spring training but no one knew what would happen or what the plan was. Joba Chamberlain didn't even know until recently, he is going to make 6 more starts. The debate continues with this guy now just in a different way, it has been proven that young pitchers under 25 should not increase their innings by too much more then 30 year to year. Joba Chamberlain has had some arm issues in the past and he didn't pitch much in college or the minor leagues so that is also why the Yankees want to be extra careful with him. Joba Chamberlain appears to be on pace for about 165 innings this year and then the postseason where the Yankees say don't count, it is just a regular season innings limit. The question is this Joba only threw a little over a 100 innings last year so isn't 165 too many innings?? How did the Yankees come up with this number and if it is so strict why doesn't it matter in the postseason?? I personally believe that he needs to be the 4th starter in the postseason and may only get 2 starts if the Yankees make the world series so it won't be going that much over the limit but still why does it seem to change because it is the postseason?? Did the Yankees factor this in and aren't telling anyone but this is way more then the suggested 30 innings increase that most teams go by. I guess the bottom line is this, if Joba pitches well and helps the Yankees win the world series and is healthy then no one is going to worry about it. I also am going to believe that the Yankees know better then any of us what they are doing, they are the New York Yankees after all. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 11:39 PM 0 comments

Yankees at Red Sox(The Rubber Game)
The New York Yankees will try and win the 3 game series with the Boston Red Sox tonight at 8 on ESPN. The Yankees also will be finishing a roadtrip where they are 6-3, 7-3 would be great and 6-4 isn't bad if they lose. CC Sabathia will go up against Josh Beckett in a marquee matchup. Here are the pregame notes and lineup via the Lohud Yankees Blog.
The Yankees are 5-9 against the Red Sox this season being outscored 118-114.
Derek Jeter is one hit away from 2,700 for his career. He is 16 of his last 29 and 19 of 39 on the roadtrip with 8 rbi's and 8 runs scored.
Sabathia is 4-0 with a 2.35 era in his last 4 starts. He has pitched 30 2/3 innings allowing 20 hits, 5 walks and striking out 31.
Sabathia is 32-9 with a 3.14 era in August in his career.
Josh Beckett is 2-0 with 4.12 era in 4 starts against the Yankees this season.
Boston has 20 homeruns in their last 8 games.
David Ortiz has 5 homeruns in his last 8 games. Boston is 18-2 when he hits a homerun so CC don't give up a homerun to him.
Nick Swisher has 18 of his 21 homeruns on the road. He has hit in 8 straight games with 5 runs scored, 7 rbi's.
Yankee relievers in the last 2 games have allowed 7 innings, 11 hits, 9 earned runs and 3 homeruns. Of course this is Fenway Park and a lot of pitchers have bad days there.
Check out weei.com to see what Jonathan Papelbon said about Billy Wagner. I would tell him to let the GM worry about trades and stuff and not him, of course he had to be classy and open his mouth as usual.
Jason Giambi and Russ Ortiz were signed by the Colorado Rockies today.

White Sox at Yanks pitching matchups
The New York Yankees will begin a 3 game series with the Chicago White Sox tonight at the stadium. The weather is looking terrible right now and doesn't look like it is going to be much better so who knows with that. It is supposed to rain tomorrow with Tropical Storm Danny passing by. Here are the pitching matchups for the series.
Tonight- CC Sabathia vs Mark Buehrle
Saturday- Sergio Mitre vs TBA
Sunday- Joba Chamberlain vs Freddy Garcia
Saturday a lot of people thought it would be Jake Peavy but he is pitching in AAA instead so it will not be him. Tonight is a good matchup but the Yankees seem to hit Buehrle historically and beat him. Joba will be on his normal rest so lets see if he can get it going. Posted by Gary W. Yankees at Orioles
The New York Yankees begin a 3 game series tonight in Baltimore at 7:05 on the YES network. The Yankees are also beginning a 7 game roadtrip that will see them go to Toronto for 4 games after they are finished with Baltimore. The Yankees begin today with a 6 game lead in the AL East and a 4 1/2 game lead on the Angels for best record in the AL and homefield advantage. The Red Sox are idle and begin a 3 game series in Tampa tomorrow. The Angels are playing in Seattle tonight. Here are pregame notes and the lineup via the great Lohud Yankees blog.
The Yankees are 9-3 against the Orioles this season.
The Yankees are 20-7 in August so they hate to see it go, but tomorrow September begins.
Derek Jeter is hitting 381 this month with 26 runs scored, 17 rbi's and 11 extra base hits. He has reached base in the first inning in 9 of the last 13 games.
Johnny Damon is 9 of his last 23 with 6 runs scored, 5 rbi's and 3 xbh.
Jorge Posada is 8 of his last 20 with 5 xbh and 10 rbi's. He came back yesterday from 3 days off and looked good, hopefully this contraption on his finger will hold up.
Andy Pettitte is 3-1 with a 2.79 era since the all star break. He has allowed only 43 hits in 51 2/3 innings with 54 strikeouts.
Pettitte is 25-6 career against the Orioles with a 3.65 era. He has 38 career appearances against them. He has more wins against the Orioles then any other team.
Guthrie is 1-2 with a 5.21 era this season against the Yanks. I would expect them to hit him hard tonight.
Phil Coke in his last 14 appearances has gone 11 innings, given up 15 hits, 13 earned runs, 4 walks, 7 strikeouts and 4 homeruns. He has allowed 10 homeruns this season. Jensen Lewis of Cleveland is the only reliever in the AL to give up more. He has given up 11.

Pitching matchups for Yanks/Orioles
Tonight- Andy Pettitte vs Jeremy Guthrie
Tomorrow- A.J. Burnett vs David Hernandez
Wednesday- CC Sabathia vs Jason Berken
The Yankees always have played well in Baltimore and should be able to score lots of runs there. Baltimore is an up and coming team though. I love their outfield, they are definitely headed in the right direction. I would think the Yanks win 2 out of 3. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 2:12 PM 0 comments

Yanks win 5th in row
The New York Yankees defeated the Baltimore Orioles tonight by the score of 9-6. A.J. Burnett got the start and had nothing as he went 5 1/3 innings giving up 6 runs. He hasn't won a game in over a month and it may be cause for concern now. He didn't pitch bad his last time out but tonight he just had nothing going. I would think now is the time for A.J. to get it together so he can head into the postseason with confidence, I would think he would be the game 2 starter but maybe he will be the game 3 starter the way it is going. The Yankees offense bailed him out with 5 homruns, 2 of them off of the bat of Jorge Posada who is 1 homerun shy of putting the Yankees at 7 players with 20 or more homeruns. Robinson Cano had 2 hits as he continues to demolish Baltimore pitching this season. He is batting I believe it is 481 against them now this season. The only guy in the lineup without a hit was Mark Teixeira. A-rod had a rbi single, Nick Swisher had a homerun and so did Eric Hinske in fact they went back to back. Melky Cabrera had 2 hits as he has been showing signs of life lately which is a good sign, Brett Gardner should be back somewhat soon but we will see what he can do when he comes back. The Yankees will be going for the sweep tomorrow night with their ace CC Sabathia on the mound. The Yankees are now 36 games over 500, they haven't been this far over 500 since they finished the 2004 season 40 games over. The Yankees have 30 games left this season, could they win 16 more to get to 100, it is looking pretty good but the only thing that is going to matter now is winning in the postseason and getting that 27th championship. Yanks and Rays play 2
The New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays are playing a day night doubleheader today in the Bronx. It is Labor Day and what is better then a baseball doubleheader, well the fact that Derek Jeter could also break the all time franchise record for hits currently held by Lou Gehrig. Derek Jeter needs 3 more to tie and 4 to break it, so there is a pretty good chance he could do it today. CC Sabathia pitches the daygame with A.J. Burnett pitching the nightcap. A.J. needs to get a win as he has gone 6 starts without a victory and hasn't been pitching well at all. Here are the pregame notes and linup via Peter Abraham for Game 1.
The Yankees start today with a 7 1/2 game lead on Boston for first place in the AL East and a 5 game lead on Anaheim for best record and homefield advantage.
The Red Sox will finish their series with the White Sox today and Anaheim with K.C.
It is Suzyn Waldmans birthday, happy birthday to her and continued success.
CC Sabathia is 6-0 with a 2.45 era in his last 7 starts.
Mo is cleared to pitch after missing 5 games with a sore groin. They may only use him in one game and Hughes may be the closer in the other, which doesn't seem to be a problem as he has done so well in that role.
Shelly Duncan and Brett Gardner were recalled from Scranton, Gardner has been out with a broken thumb and they missed his speed, it will also help Melky who has been hot lately but seemed to be worn down before this recent hot streak. Shelly Duncan is a fan favorite so good for him. On a personal note him and Francisco Cervelli who is also up took pictures with my daughter a couple of weeks ago in Scranton so it is great to see them with the Yankees.

Yanks beat Angels at their own game
The New York Yankees defeated the Angels 5-3 tonight in a playoff type of game. Joba Chamberlain got the start and pitched 4 good innings. He gave up 1 run on 4 hits with a couple of strikeouts. Alfredo Aceves pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up 2 hits, 1 run with 2 walks and a couple of strikeouts. Phil Coke pitched a very important 2/3 of an inning giving up 0 runs on 0 hits with a strikeout. Phil Hughes pitched the 8th and got himself in trouble with a couple of hits and a walk to load the bases with no outs and then got a double play and a soft line drive. He gave up the lead but showed great poise to get out of it without allowing anymore. Mariano gave up a walk but nothing else in locking down his 36th straight save.
The offense was led by Mark Teixeira who had a single, double and triple. He had a couple of rbi's. Hideki Matsui had a hit and a walk, Robinson Cano and Nick Swisher each had 2 hits and a rbi. The biggest play of the game though was Brett Gardner coming off of the bench and pinch running for Mark Teixeira in the 8th inning. He stole third and scampered home on the wild throw to give the Yankees the lead before they tacked on another run. The Yankees beat the Angels at their own game and that is great to see. The Yankees have beaten the Angels 3 out of 4 at home this season and are 0-3 in Anaheim so homefield is huge as they may see them again in the ALCS. The Yankees begin a 2 game series with Toronto tomorrow, Sergio Mitre will take on Roy Halladay. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 11:02 PM 0 comments

Pitching Matchups for Yanks/Jays series
The New York Yankees will complete their 10 game homestand starting tonight with a 2 game series against the Toronto Blue Jays. Here are the pitching matchups.
Tonight- Sergio Mitre vs Roy Halladay
Tomorrow- TBA vs Brian Tallett
This matchup tonight is one of the biggest mismatches you could ever have but the game isn't played on paper. The Yankees did get to Roy Halladay in his only appearance at Yankee Stadium earlier this season. Tomorrow we don't know who is pitching for the Yankees so it is hard to say. The Yankees will be happy to get a game here and move on to the westcoast. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 1:48 PM 0 comments

Yanks take series over Angels
The New York Yankees did the unthinkable this afternoon, they beat the Angels by the score of 3-2. You may ask why is that unthinkable, well because they actually took a series in Anaheim for the first time since May of 2004. A.J. Burnett got the start and had filthy stuff striking out 11 in 5 2/3 innings. He gave up 2 runs on 7 hits with 3 walks. Damaso Marte pitched an inning giving up a hit, Phil Coke struck out the only batter he faced, Ian Kennedy gave up 2 walks but pitched a scoreless inning and Mariano gave up a single but got another save his second straight since blowing one on friday night. The offense wasn't too good but they were without A-rod, Jorge Posada and Nick Swisher. Jorge Posada and Nick Swisher were banged up after getting hit the night before but X-rays were negative on Posada which was good news and he is day to day and Nick Swisher is the same. Robinson Cano had a big 2 run single, Shelly Duncan had a hit getting the start in right field. Derek Jeter had a hit and a walk and Mark Teixeira also had a hit and a walk. Melky Cabrera had a couple of hits and Brett Gardner had a hit. Melky Cabrera had a rbi also, the Yankees scored all of their runs in the fourth inning and held on. The Yankees can now clinch the division on their homestand and render the last 3 games of the year in Tampa completely meaningless. The Red Sox are playing tonight and winning and will also play tomorrow before taking on the Yankees on Friday with Jon Lester going up against Joba Chamberlain. The Yankees have now won 3 of the last 4 against the Angels and proved they can win in Anaheim which is huge considering they may face off in the ALCS. Posted by Gary W. Yanks are AL East Champs

These pictures say it all, there are a lot more out there on the web but I thought I would just post a couple. The New York Yankees are the AL East division Champs and have homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. I think it was fitting that Andy Pettitte got the win and Mariano closed it out for him like they have done so many times before. Derek Jeter got a couple of more hits. The scene was great as they had a nice celebration but kept mentioning to Kim Jones on YES that they aren't finished and this is the first of their goals. I really feel confident with this team going into the playoffs with CC Sabathia being the ace of this staff and Pettitte and A.J. Burnett falling behind him and a good bullpen with a deep lineup. This team should beat Detroit or Minnesota because they are just better then them. The ALCS will be fun if they make it there because they will play one of their two rivals in the Angels or Red Sox. The Yankees will take this last week to rest some guys and get Dave Robertson into 2 or 3 games and make sure he is ready to go for the postseason. Joba will make his last start on Wednesday and that will be important also as they want to see him pitch well again before putting him in the bullpen for the first round and him being the 4th starter after that. The Yankees will enjoy this now but in another week get back to work and focus on winning 11 more as they strive for Title 27.

Yanks walkoff with another win
The New York Yankees defeated the Kansas City Royals tonight by the score of 4-3. They continued their magical season with their 15th walkoff win and 50th come from behind victory of the year. A.J. Burnett got the start and looked great pitching 6 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs, 1 earned on 3 hits with 3 walks and 8 strikeouts. Phil Coke came in to pitch and pitched a inning and 2/3 he gave up a couple of runs but basically because of his fielding as he took his time on a bunt and let Gordon beat it out then threw a ball hit back to him into center field and then on another comebacker to him didn't throw home when the runner was clearly dead in the water. Dave Robertson pitched 2/3 of an inning not allowing a hit or run. Brian Bruney finished it off with 1 1/3 scoreless innings as he trys to work himself onto the postseason roster.
Juan Miranda had the walkoff hit which is great to see out of another young guy. Francisco Cervelli had a hit, A-rod had a hit and a walk. Derek Jeter had a hit and a walk, Mark Teixeira had a solo homerun giving him 39 homeruns and 121 rbi's. Nick Swisher had a solo homerun and Jose Molina had a hit. The ninth inning started with a single by Francisco Cervelli, Eric Hinske had a pinch hit single putting Cervelli on third. Robinson Cano got ahead 3-0 and got the green light and promptly crushed a ball to deep center, it was caught but was a sac fly. Eric Hinske then stole second and went to third when the ball was thrown into center. Johnny Damon was walked intentionally and Juan Miranda hit a single off of Kyle Farnsworths leg. The Yankees will go for the sweep in the final regular season home game of the year. Joba Chamberlain will try and end his season on a good note and continue the success he had from his last start against Boston. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 11:20 PM 0 comments

Yanks lose again in Tampa, still await opponent
There isn't much to say about tonights game, the Yankees lost 5-3. Andy Pettitte started and wasn't great at all just couldn't get anything going. I wouldn't look too much into it though, as he said it is over and I am looking forward to the playoffs. The bullpen was good again making the decisions on the Yankees very tough as to who the last couple of spots on the playoff roster is going to go to. The Yankees will have Joba Chamberlain work out of the bullpen tomorrow and that is where he will be used in the ALDS it appears and then they will see what to do in the ALCS should they get that far. The Yankees still don't know who they will be playing as that could be a factor with some roster choices depending on who they play. The Twins will send Carl Pavano to the mound tomorrow with the Tigers sending Justin Verlander, if they both win or both lose there will be a one game playoff on Tuesday from the Metrodome. The Yankees have one hour after they know their opponent to choose which series they want but I am sure they are taking the extra days off so they will use 3 starters and be able to use Hughes and Mo in every game also. The most important thing about this game was the Yankees came out of it healthy and have one more meaningless game tomorrow. The regulars will play tomorrow except for Posada who will be managing as is a tradition from the Joe Torre days. It looks like this could be a trend in the playoffs also with Molina catching A.J. and Posada being the DH. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 11:36 PM 0 comments

Finishing off the Recap of the Twins Series
Here are some number to look at and ponder before we start looking ahead to the ALCS which will begin on Friday at 7:57PM on Fox. I will also start looking at the NLCS which is a rematch from last year between the LA Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies. Here are some of the numbers from the Yankees/Twins series.
1.42 era for the Yankees starters
2 runs given up by the Yankees bullpen in 10 innings.
5 runs scored by the Yankees in the final innings of the three games.
6 homeruns hit by the Yankees.
15 total runs scored by the Yankees.
The Yankees finished 10-0 against the Twins including the postseason.
The Yankees had 10 pitchers appear in the ALDS.
A-rod had a 455 batting avg which is tops on the team.
A-rod also had 2 homeruns and 6 rbi's. His 2 homeruns were 2 more then he had in his last 16 postseason games.
99,470 was the combined attendance of Games 1 and 2 at Yankee Stadium.
Those are numbers to ponder and think about but I will have a post up later looking ahead to the ALCS and NLCS. This is going to be a great series between the Angels and Yankees.

Preview of the ALCS-Yanks/Angels
The New York Yankees and Anaheim Angels played 10 games in 2009 and went 5-5. 6 of those games were played in Anaheim where the Yankees went 2-4 getting swept there right before the all star break but then winning 2 out of 3 in the middle of September. The Yankees won 2 out of 3 at home early in the season and then a makeup game in September. The Yankees historically have had their problems with the Angels as is well documented. They lost to them in the playoffs twice in 2002 and 2005 but that was a long time ago. The Yankees only have played them in the ALDS, never in the ALCS. This will be the Yankees first appearance in the ALCS since 2004.
Pitching- The Angels ace is John Lackey who was hurt earlier in the year but pitched very well in Game 1 against the Red Sox in the ALDS. CC Sabathia pitched very well also in Game 1 of the ALDS against the Twins. This should be a good matchup but I think the Yankees have a slight advantage here. John Lackey has made 10 postseason starts and has a 3.02 era while Sabathia has struggled before Game 1 of the ALDS. Lackey has had less strikeouts and more walks since his arm injuries the last two seasons. Lackey has made 3 appearances in the playoffs against the Yankees, two as a starter. He has surrendered 3 earned runs and 10 hits in 14 1/3 innings which is a 1.88 era. Lackey won his only start against the Yankees this season on July 12th against CC Sabathia. He gave up 2 earned runs in 7 innings. He is 5-7 with a 4.66 era in 16 career starts against the Yankees. CC Sabathia was 0-2 with a 6.08 era against the Angels this season in 2 starts.
A.J. Burnett will be pitching at home once again in game 2 where he really flourishes and has good feelings now that he got his first postseason start out of the way and pitched well. The Angels rotation won't be announced until tomorrow but it looks like they may go with Joe Saunders in game 2, the manager said he wants a lefty going in Yankee stadium so it could also be Scott Kazmir but it looks like they are leaning towards Saunders with Weaver going in game 3 and Kazmir in game 4. I think the Yankees have the slight edge in pitching but the Angels starters aren't so bad themselves. The main difference with the pitching is the bullpens where the Yankees have a much better and deeper bullpen. Brian Fuentes is a good closer but the Angels don't have much other then that. Jepson has been pretty good but overall the weakness of their team is the bullpen.
Hitting- The Yankees have arguably the best lineup in baseball and A-rod is hot and carried the Yankees in the first round but other then him and Derek Jeter they didn't hit much against the Twins. Johnny Damon had a really rough series with 1 hit and 4 strikeouts. Robinson Cano, Melky Cabrera, Hideki Matsui, Nick Swisher none of these guys really did anything or not much at all and the Yankees will look for the offense to really get going now in the ALCS. The Angels were carried by Bobby Abreu who batted close to 600 in the ALDS. Vlady Guerrero is a big bat still and Torii Hunter is a solid player. The key for the Angels is to get chone figgins and Maiztur Izturis on base and then start the running game. If the Yankees pitchers keep them off of base then they will have success. The Yankees want to grind out at bats and get to the bullpen early and go to work on the Angels weakness. I would give the Yankees the edge in hitting but the Angels are pretty good.
I would think this series is going 6 or 7 games and I am going to pick the Yankees in 6. The Yankees will have confidence that they finally won a couple of games in Anaheim and they played well at home against them and they have the homefield advantage. I think everything so far has gone the Yankees way and they are capable of playing even better and will to get back to the World Series. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 6:39 PM 0 comments

CC dominates Angels
The New York Yankees won Game 1 of the ALCS 4-1 tonight. CC Sabathia is the story of the game as he went 8 innings giving up 4 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and 7 strikeouts. He was just dominant all night, never in trouble. The Yankees scored two early runs with some help from the Angels defense. A-rod had a sac fly, single and a couple of walks. Johnny Damon had a couple of hits after having a terrible ALDS. Robinson Cano continues to struggle as well as Hideki Matsui. The story of the game though was the pitching and if CC continues to pitch like this then the Yankees will be hard to beat. A.J. Burnett will try to go out tomorrow and pitch just like this and really put the Angels in a hole heading back to Anaheim. The weather doesn't look good for tommorrow so they may not play until Sunday but hopefully they can play tomorrow and keep it going. I thought the Yankees offense was better but still not great but in the postseason these are the type of games that are played. It was about 30 degrees and that doesn't help the hitters, so you have to pitch and play defense and you will win games. The Yankees are scoring enough runs to win and that is all that matters. It looked like Joe Girardi listens to talk radio and the papers as he let CC go where as he had a quick hook in the ALDS and got criticized for it. Posted by Gary W. Angels at Yankees-ALCS Game1
It has been a long wait, 5 days to be exact but it is finally time to play some baseball. The weather is looking ok for tonight and they should be able to get the game in uninterrupted. It doesn't look great for tomorrow unless they change the time and Sunday doesn't look great either but we will wait and see what happens. It will be really cold like in the 30's tonight with the wind being 15-20mph. The Yankees and Angels both swept their first round series and are now starting over again. This is the first time these two teams will meet in a best of 7 series. The Angels eliminated the Yankees in the best of 5 in 2002 and 2005. Here are the pregame notes and lineups via Sam Borden of the Journal News and the Yankees media guide.
CC will pitch 3 times in this series if the weather permits. He has pitched well on 3 days rest in the past but the Angels do well against him. He was 0-2 with a 6.08 era in 2 starts against them this season and is 5-7 with a 4.72 era in 14 career starts.
A-rod had a monster division series and he has done well against the Angels this season. He was 8 for 24 with 5 homeruns and 9 rbi's against the Angels this year.
Johnny Damon was the only regular that took part in a simulated game on Tuesday at the Stadium. He was 1 for 12 in the ALDS and is hitless in his last 10 at bats. Him and Kevin Long worked on things and they think they found a mechanical flaw that they fixed.
MO is still the best, he appeared in all 3 games of the ALDS and didn't allow a run while striking out 7. Joe Girardi will go to him early if he has too and won't be worried about it. If you look around all the other closers had trouble in the first round but not MO.
The Yankees have been great against the other teams bullpens this season and the Angels weakness is their bullpen. Brian Fuentes the closer led the league in saves but he also blew 7 of them and had a 1.40 whip. He has untested or aging guys behind him and if they have to go to the pen early and often they could be in trouble against the Yankees.

Damon(LF)
Tex(1B)
A-rod(3B)
Matsui(DH)

Yankees win a classic
The New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim last night or early this morning depending on how you look at it by the score of 4-3. This game was truly a classic, leading up to this game everyone was saying how they wouldn't get it in and all the weather problems and scenarios that would or could take place and not only did they get it in they played 13 innings. A.J. Burnett got the start and was really really good except for the 5th inning where he gave up 2 runs but got out of a jam, it could of been a lot worse. He ended up pitching 6 1/3 innings giving up 2 runs on 3 hits with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. Phil Coke came in to finish the 7th and walked the first batter but then struck out Bobby Abreu and Joba Chamberlain finished the inning off with a strikeout. It looked for a while that the 5th inning would really come back to haunt the Yankees. They gave up a 2-0 lead and then had 1st and second no outs and Derek Jeter at the plate. I was expecting him to bunt to move the runners over with Damon and Teixeira coming up but instead he bounced into a 1-6-3 double play. Johnny Damon stranded the runner on third and for a while the Yankees couldn't get anything going after that against Joe Saunders and the Angels bullpen who were outstanding. The Yankees bullpen was also outstanding as Phil Hughes pitched 2/3 of an inning scoreless and then Mariano Rivera pitched 2 1/3 scorless innings. He gave up one hit and had 2 strikeouts. Alfredo Aceves pitched a inning and a third and actually gave up the lead in the 11th but A-rod answered back off Angels closer Brian Fuentes with a game tying homerun to rightfield. A-rod now has 3 homeruns and 8 rbi's in 5 games this postseason. All of his homeruns have tied the game for the Yankees and all were in the 7th inning or later. Damaso Marte retired the one batter he faced and Dave Robertson pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings giving up 1 hit, 2 walks and he had a strikeout. The Yankees won it in the bottom of the 13th when Jerry Hairston Jr. who was the last player on the bench led off with a single. Brett Gardner bunted him over to second and then Robinson Cano was intentionally walked. Melky Cabrera came to bat and hit one to the right side that looked like it may get through and be a game winning single but Izturis the second baseman made a nice play to get to it but for some reason attempted to throw to second, threw wildly and it went into left field and Hairston came around third and scored the game winning run. The Yankees now lead the series 2 games to none with the next 3 if needed in Anaheim. Andy Pettitte will be on the mound against Jered Weaver tomorrow afternoon at 4:15. This game was a classic lasting 5 hours and 10 minutes seeing 8 pitchers for the Yankees and 5 for the Angels. There was a blown save by Fuentes, Mariano being Mariano and A-rod being the hero again. There was a lot of great pitching and some clutch hitting with some shoddy defense on both sides, I think the weather had a lot to do with it and I am sure they will all be happy they will be in warm and sunny southern California now for a few days. Yankees at Angels-ALCS Game 3
The Yankees will be trying to put a strangle hold on this series this afternoon. The game is at 4:15PM on Fox. Andy Pettitte goes up against Jered Weaver who looks exactly like his brother Jeff Weaver who was a former Yankee. Here are the notes and lineups via Chad Jennings and Sam Borden of the Journal News.
The weather won't be a factor out in sunny southern california where the temps will be around the 70's.
The last Yankees team to win their first 5 postseason games were the 1999 Yankees. The 1970 Orioles are the only AL team to win its first six.
Andy Pettitte is tied for John Smoltz for most victories alltime in the postseason. If he wins today's game he will be all alone on top of the list.
The 21 players the Yankees used in Game 2 set a new ALCS record in a extra inning game. The 38 combined players used by both teams also set a ALCS record.
Yankees relievers have allowed 3 earned runs in 17 2/3 innings pitched this postseason. They are 2-0 with 2 saves and 20 strikeouts.
The Angels have made 4 errors in the first 2 games of the series and are hitting 154 as a team. You would expect that to change but maybe the Yankees pitching is that good and the pressure is on the Angels.
Vlad Guerrero simply isn't the same player he used to be, he stranded 8 runners in Game 2 and has 2 rbi's this postseason.
Derek Jeter hit his 19th postseason homerun in Game 2 moving him past Reggie Jackson and Mickey Mantle into sole possession of third place on the alltime list. I would say of course though he has had many more games to do it in though.

Angels answer back
The New York Yankees lost to the Anaheim Angels by the score of 5-4 in 11 innings this evening. Andy Pettitte started the game and pitched well except for one huge mistake giving up a 2 run homerun to Vlady Guerrero with 2 outs and 2 strikes. The curious thing was that Joe Girardi came out to talk to them right before the homerun and looked right at Jorge Posada. I am guessing as were the announcers that he was saying don't throw a strike and yes Pettitte missed his spot but why not just throw something in the dirt and get him to chase. The Yankees also had many chances going 0-8 with RISP and that just won't cut it. The worst decision of the game and the one that ultimately cost the Yankees was taking Dave Robertson out of the game when he got 2 easy outs for Alfredo Aceves who gave up a single and double to lose the game, this just makes no sense when it wasn't like one guy had great numbers and the other didn't against Kendrick. Robertson had faced him twice and Aceves never faced him. Joe Girardi was upset after the game and just said they liked the matchup better but cut the interview short and wouldn't talk about it. The Yankees really need to start scoring other ways then just hitting homeruns. The Yankees once again didn't play great at least not from a offensive standpoint but are still in control of this series and have to feel good about CC going tomorrow against Scott Kazmir. If the Yankees can win tomorrow they will be in great shape no matter what happens in Game 5. A-rod hit another homerun and so did Derek Jeter but Tex, Cano, Swisher and Cabrera are really killing the Yankees, I wonder if Girardi will sit Swisher tomorrow and go with Gardner in center and either Hairston or Melky in right. Yankees pound the Angels
The New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim by the score of 10-1 to take a commanding 3 games to 1 lead in the ALCS. CC Sabathia pitching on 3 days rest was simply unbelievable. He is a horse and a true ace that is a throwback type of pitcher. He went 8 strong throwing only just over 100 pitches giving up 1 run on 5 hits with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts. Chad Guadin finished the game off with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. CC Sabathia was signed in the offseason for a crazy amount of money that a lot of people felt the Yankees were bidding against themselves and went overboard but he is showing that he is worth every penny. CC Sabathia has been everything and more that the Yankees could of dreamed of. He has lost one game since July 28th including going 3-0 in the playoffs with a 1.19 era. The other hero is A-rod who has just become the player everyone has been waiting for. He had a single, double, homerun. He now has a rbi in 8 straight postseason games which ties him for the ML record. He also now is one homerun behind Bernie Williams for most in one postseason in Yankees history. He is batting over 400 with 5 homeruns and 11 rbi's in 7 postseason games. Derek Jeter had a couple more hits but Melky Cabrera had 3 hits to get back on track, Robinson Cano had a couple of hits and Johnny Damon had a couple of hits once again. The Yankees offense had been struggling but got back on track this evening. The only guy that really hasn't done anything is Nick Swisher. Jorge Posada had a strong game today also. The Yankees will now have tomorrow off and have A.J. Burnett on the mound to send them to the World Series on Thursday night against John Lackey. I wonder if Joe Girardi will sit Nick Swisher and put Brett Gardner in CF and Melky Cabrera in RF. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 11:46 PM 0 comments

Workout Day before Game 3
The New York Yankees boarded a train from Penn Station and took the hour train ride to Philly this afternoon. There wasn't much news out of the Yankees other then Joe Girardi saying that Johnny Damon will be in left field which means Matsui will be on the bench. The Yankees one interesting decision for tomorrow is who plays right field but Hinske and Swisher have never faced Hamels and Hairston is 2-10 lifetime against him. Joe Girardi is a book guy but there is nothing to really go bsy here. I am going to guess that Nick Swisher is back in right field.
The Phillies announced today that Joe Blanton would start Game 4 and Cliff Lee Game 5. Cliff Lee has never pitched on 3 days rest and that is why they don't want to do it now. I say it is the World Series there is no tomorrow. I would have pitched him 3 times, this gives an edge to the Yankees knowing they will only see him one more time.
If you want to hear some audi you can go to www.mlb.com or www.yankees.lhblogs.com. Andy Pettitte who has been very good will be on the mound against Cole Hamels who has struggled. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 10:41 PM 0 comments

Yankees at Phillies-World Series Game 3
The Yankees will try and take the lead in the series 2 games to 1. The game starts at 7:57 on FOX. Andy Pettitte is on the mound against Cole Hamels who was the MVP of last years World Series but this postseason has been horrible pitching to a near 7 era. Here are the notes and lineups via Sam Borden and Chad Jennings of the Journal News. The Yankees are 3 wins away from their 27th World Title and first in 9 years.
People often talk about Game 3 as the swing game in a World Series and there's some truth to it: The team winning Game 3 has gone on to win in 35 of 53 World Series that were tied at 1, including each of the last two and nine of the last 10. The lone exception? You probably already know it. The Yankees won Game 3 of the 2003 World Series but then lost three straight to the Marlins to lose the Series.
I really like Andy Pettitte in this spot and the Yankees really have a pitching advantage tomorrow so to me this is a big big game.
The approximately 108 miles from Yankee Stadium to Citizens Bank Park is among the shortest distances between World Series sites. It was 1 1/2 miles from the Polo Grounds to Yankee Stadium (Yankees/Giants); nine miles from Yankee Stadium to Shea (Yankees/Mets); 15 miles between Ebbets Field and Yankee Stadium (Yankees/Dodgers); 22 miles between Candlestick Park and Oakland Coliseum (Giants/A's); and 98 miles between Memorial Stadium and Veterans Stadium (Orioles/Phillies). Of course, the shortest distance between World Series sites is zero: In 1921 and ‘22, all World Series games were played at the Polo Grounds and in 1944 all games were played at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. It is so close in distance the teams have been taking trains to travel from one city to the other.
Tonight is Andy Pettitte's 11th World Series start for the Yankees, which is the second-most in team history. Pettitte passes Waite Hoyt and Red Ruffing, and is now only trailing Whitey Ford, who made an insane 22 World Series starts. He is 3-4, 3.90 in his 10 previous starts for the Yankees, and 0-0, 4.26 in one World Series start with the Astros. Andy has pitched really well in these spots and has been great on the road this season. He is a guy that just blocks everything out and the crowd won't bother him.
Alex Rodriguez had a hit in all nine playoff games leading up to the World Series but is 0-for-8 with six strikeouts in the first two games of the World Series. In case you were wondering, the World Series record for strikeouts is 12, set by the Royals Willie Wilson back in 1980 against - yes - the Phillies. The Yankees would like to see him get going but he is a huge reason they are here to begin with. It will be intersting in this park as the ball really flys.
More evidence why Derek Jeter should always be hitting, instead of bunting: After going 4-for-8 in the first two games, Jeter's career World Series average is .314 (43-for-137) which is fifth-highest all-time among players with at least 100 ABs. Who's ahead of him? Only Lou Gehrig, Eddie Collins, Babe Ruth and Steve Garvey.

Joe Girardi said in his press conference that Matsui was never really an option and isn't necessarily the first pinch hitter off the bench. He will pick his spots to who to use, Hinske and Matsui will be the main guys I would think. He also announced CC Sabathia will pitch tomorrow on 3 days rest and that Burnett and Pettitte probably would also though he will wait tomorrow to announce the rotation further. He said he would like to save Gaudin until later on in the series out of the bullpen but if he has to be used tonight or tomorrow as a long man he could. Posted by Gary W. Yankees one win away from #27
The New York Yankees defeated the Philadelphia Phillies tonight by the score of 7-4. They won this game in dramatic fashion. Joba Chamberlain came on to pitch the 8th inning with the Yankees leading 4-3. He struck out the first two hitters making it look easy and then boom a homerun from Feliz and the game was tied. Joba got the last out by strikeout also. Brad Lidge came in for the 9th and got Matsui and Jeter easily so there was 2 outs and no one on when Johnny Damon put together a great at bat finishing it with a single. He then stole second and kept running to third when he saw no one covering. Mark Teixeira was up next and got plunked and then A-rod came up to the plate and smacked a rbi single and then Posada hit a 2 run single. Mariano came in to finish off the game on 9 pitches. I don't know what they will do tomorrow but if I have a lead in the 8th inning of 1 or 2 runs I would go to MO to finish this thing off.
Derek Jeter had a big game for the offense with 2 hits and a walk and rbi. Johnny Damon had 3 hits and a rbi. Jorge Posada had a hit and 3 rbi's and Melky Cabrera and Robinson Cano each had a hit. Mark Teixeira continues to struggle with only one hit in this World Series but the Yankees are one win away from their 27th World Championship anyway and he had a great year and is still making all the plays in the field. A.J. Burnett will be on the mound against Cliff Lee to try and finish this World Series off. I think it is going to be a very tough game tomorrow as all of them have been but even more so since the Phillies are facing elimination at home with their ace on the mound. Cliff Lee was dominant in Game 1 but I am not sure he can be that good again as that was a historic performance. The Yankees want to finish it but know that if they don't they will be going home to try and finish it off. I will be going to Game 6 if there is one but I don't want to go, I would love to see the Yankees win tomorrow and let the partying begin. The Yankees are a veteran team and I don't think they will think ahead but it has to be hard not to think how close to their goal they are. The Yankees have really hit the last 2 games here in Philly and must have a lot of confidence going into tomorrow. I am sure this is the biggest game of Cliff Lee's life tomorrow and it will be interesting to see how he responds. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 12:00 AM 0 comments

Yankees at Phillies-World Series Game 4
The Yankees will try to make it 3 straight over the Phillies and move within one game of their 27th World Title. CC Sabathia the Yankees horse will be on the mound against Joe Blanton who the Yankees have done really well against when they have faced him. He faced them 4 times and has a 8+era from when he was in Oakland. Here are the pregame notes and lineup via the Lohud Yankees Blog.
Sabathia will be pitching on short rest for the second time this postseason though he had extra rest (seven days) before his Game 1 start. Going short isn't a problem for Sabathia, who is 5-3 with a 3.16 ERA when pitching on short rest in his career (including postseason). The last time he did it, he went eight innings allowing just one run in Game 6 of the ALCS against the Angels. I actually think CC was a little off in Game 1 although he pitched well and expect him to be better tonight.
Alex Rodriguez finally got his first World Series hit in Game 3, hitting a two-run home run in the fourth inning also making history as the first postseason use of instant replay. Rodriguez was also hit by pitches twice, tying a World Series record set on five other occasions. If A-rod hits now in the World Series watch out, the Yankees are a different team when he is hitting.
While A-Rod broke out of his mini-slump from the first two games, Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard continues to be a non-factor. Howard fanned seven times in his eight at bats in Games 2 and 3, and his nine total strikeouts are three shy of the overall Series record (set by Kansas City's Willie Wilson in 6 games in 1980). The Yankees would like Ryan Howard to wait until next year to break out of his slump.
After struggling in his first postseason appearance during Game 3 of the Division Series, Damaso Marte has been the most reliable reliever in the Yankees bullpen ever since. He has faced nine batters and retired them all, striking out three. Marte has thrown 77 % of his pitches for strikes. Marte is finally resembling the guy the Yanks thought they traded for.
Jorge Posada's single in the seventh inning of Game 3 was his 87th postseason hit, moving him past Pete Rose and into seventh place on the all-time list.
Those who were worried about Hideki Matsui coming off the bench needn't have fretted: Matsui now has a .370 (10-for-27) career pinch hit average, including the regular and post-season. He alsoconnected for the 24th pinch-hit home run in World Series history in the eighth inning of Game 3, and that was the first since his teammate, Eric Hinske, did it for the Rays in Game 4 of last year's Series. Of the 24, it was the eighth by a Yankee (last was Jason Giambi on Oct. 23, 2003, Game 5 at Florida).
Yankees Lineup:
Jeter(SS)
Damon(LF)
Tex(1B)
A-rod(3B)
Posada(C)
Cano(2B)
Swisher(RF)
Cabrera(CF)

Joe Girardi announced to the beat writers just a little while ago that A.J. Burnett will be starting tomorrow on 3 days rest and he plans on keeping the 3 man rotation. Chad Gaudin has been told to prepare for anything but unless a starter gets knocked out early I don't think he will get into a game. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 4:06 PM 0 comments

How the Bay signing affects the Yankees
The New York Mets signing of Jason Bay has reignited the Hot Stove and it does affect the Yankees as well. The New York Mets needed to get the ball rolling and did a good job here, Yankees fans will be happy that although no one expected him to go back to Boston now it is official. The reason this really affects the Yankees is this it takes another name off of the leftfield list and Johnny Damon has less and less suitors. I am starting to believe more and more he may end up coming back to the Yankees on a 2 yr deal for around the 14 million the Yankees originally offered him. The San Francisco Giants were have said to have interest but with them signing Mark DeRosa for 2 yrs and 12 million they are out of the running, the Mets are of course out now and the St Louis Cardinals if they resign Matt Holliday which seems more likely also with the Red Sox and Yankees not involved and I wouldn't expect them to get involved. I just don't see where else Johnny Damon could wind up, maybe Tampa Bay but he is not going to get more then a 2 yr deal and he isn't going to get anymore then he will get with the Yankees.
I also know the Yankees were very interested in Mark DeRosa and the rest of the leftfield market is pretty unappealing to them so where does that leave them?? The Yankees being the Yankees could always jump in on the Matt Holliday sweepstakes but I just don't see that happening with them being steadfast in staying under their budget from last season. I am also sure they won't wind up with Brett Gardner and Jamie Hoffman as the left field platoon so this leads me to believe that they could work something out with Johnny Damon. Posted by Gary W. Yankees projected roster
Wildcard weekend starts in a little less then an hour and spring training tickets went on sale for most teams today. I thought with this in mind that it would be a good time to take a look at the Yankees roster since it is pretty much complete. I am going to start by going through the positions and then I will do the rotation, bullpen and lineup as I think it will be.
C-Jorge Posada
1B-Mark Teixeira
2B-Robinson Cano
SS-Derek Jeter
3B-Alex Rodriguez
LF-Brett Gardner
CF-Curtis Granderson
RF-Nick Swisher
Bench
Francisco Cervelli
Ramiro Pena
Jaime Hoffman
Rotation
CC Sabathia
A.J. Burnett
Andy Pettitte
Javier Vazquez
Phil Hughes
Bullpen
Mo-Closer
Joba-Setup man
Dave Robertson-setup man
Damaso Marte-lefty setup man
Boone Logan-specialty lefty
Alfredo Aceves-middle relief
Chad Guadin-long relief
Lineup
Derek Jeter
Nick Johnson
Mark Teixeira
Alex Rodriguez
Jorge Posada
Robinson Cano
Nick Swisher
Curtis Granderson
Brett Gardner
There may be some difference with Joba as the 5th starter and Phil Hughes as a setup man and maybe in the bullpen there may be some other guys who make it like Sergio Mitre or Albaladejo etc but this is how I think it will shake out. It is also possible the Yankees do sign a right handed hitter to play leftfield against lefties and come off the bench like a Reed Johnson. What do you guys think about this team, lineup, rotation etc??? I think this is a very strong team still even without Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui. I think they will be better defensively and pitching wise. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 3:40 PM 0 comments

Baseball News
The New York Mets made a trade today to get another outfielder with the absence of Carlos Beltran for at least the beginning of the season. They traded right handed pitcher Brian Stokes to the Anahiem Angels for Gary Matthews Jr. He isn't the same player he was at one time, but should provide pretty good defense. The reason this deal is ok for the Mets is because the Angels were so happy to get rid of him that they are paying 21 million of the 23 million owed to him over the next 2 years.
This story is fascinating to me if not a little strange. A 23 yr old prospect from the Oakland A's is leaving baseball for the priesthood, this is something you don't see everyday. The really strange thing about it is that he had a great year last year and appeared to be closing in on getting to the big leagues.
The Philadelphia Phillies have signed pitcher Jose Contreras. He was ok at one time, never really made it with the Yankees. I guess this is a good move for depth reasons but I just can't see him succeeding in that park. The thing to me is how are the Mets not making any moves for a pitcher when that is what they really need.
Here is a nice article with Curtis Granderson, the new Yankees centerfielder. One of the quotes that came out of this article was this " When you wear it, man it is something, it pops." That was Granderson on wearing the Yankees cap.
Jim Edmonds who was an elite centerfielder at one time but hasn't played since 2008 is trying to get a job, several teams have called him and apparently the Yankees are one of them. I just don't see the Yankees going for this guy, they can stick with what they have or hope to get Damon back or maybe just sign Reed Johnson or someone like that for leftfield or to caddy with Gardner out there. Yankees Lose To Phillies
The New York Yankees lost to the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 3-2 this afternoon. CC Sabathia got the start and wasn't perfect giving up 2 hits and 2 walks in 2 innings. He didn't give up a run though and was pleased with his first outing. He said April 4th is when it matters and he understands what he has to do to get ready. He said that his delivery was so-so and that he had a couple of times where he fell off the mound and wasn't headed toward the plate. He said he will work on that in his bullpen coming up. Roy Halladay who started for the Phillies was his usual self facing the Yankees. He pitched 2 perfect innings with 3 strikeouts.
Zack Segovia, Zach McAllister, Ivan Nova and Mark Melancon all pitched scoreless innings. Segovia gave up a walk and Melancon gave up a hit but had 2 strikeouts. Romulo Sanchez pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up 2 hits, a run and a walk. Boone Logan pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings and Wilkens Arias blew a save and got the loss pitching 2/3 of an inning giving up 3 hits and 2 runs, he did have a strikeout.
The Yankees offense didn't see anyone get more then a hit. Jaime Hoffman, Jesus Montero, Robinson Cano, Eduardo Nunez, David Winfree, Colin Curtis, Jose Gil and Brandon Laird all had one hit. Colin Curtis is really trying to make a name for himself after hitting a 3 run walkoff homerun yesterday. The rbi's were produced by Jose Gil and David Winfree. Winfree is another one of the outfielders trying to stick as the 5th OF but he is a long shot, Jaime Hoffman is the rule 5 pick who has to make the team and stay on it all year or be offered back to the Dodgers for half the price 25,000. Jorge Posada, Randy Winn and Ramiro Pena all struck out twice.
The Yankees will host the Tampa Bay Rays tomorrow afternoon at 1:00PM with Phil Hughes getting the start. Joba Chamberlain is scheduled to pitch also in this game. The game will be televised on the YES network. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 5:51 PM 0 comments

Recap of todays Yankees game and some Notes
The New York Yankees took it on the chin today losing to the Toronto Blue Jays by the score of 9-1. The story of the game though wasn't the final outcome it was Francisco Cervelli getting beaned in the head and leaving the game. He did seem ok on the field and was helped off of it but did get up under his own power. He was taken to a local hospital for precautionary testing which included a CT scan. The tests were negative and he said he was feeling a little dizzy and had a headache but he should be back in a couple of days. The story of the game on the field would be A.J. Burnett making his first start.
He wasn't great but he was happy that he got his work in and did what he wanted to do. He was throwing only a fastball and changeup and as Joe Girardi said, his out pitch is the curveball and if you take that away, it is a different pitcher. He wasn't concerned with the results, just that he got his work in and starts to feel good about his changeup. His line on the day was 1 2/3 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs and 1 walk. He guessed that he threw 10 changeups on the day. Here is what Jorge Posada said about his outing "He's starting it down, that's the big thing. He's finishing it well. There was one of them that was up, hit off the end of the bat, but I thought he did a great job."
Boone Logan was very impressive again, in his debut he retired all 4 batters he faced and 3 were lefties. Today he pitched 2 perfect innings with 2 strikeouts. I know it is early but he is really making a case to be the second lefty if the yankees carry one. Jonathan Albaladejo on the flip side was just awful, it was actually painful to watch. He got torched for 7 hits and 5 runs in 1/3 of an inning. He also walked a batter. That is his second bad outing, I don't think he will be making the team out of spring training this year. Mark Melancon continues to impress, the Yankees still have high hopes for him. He pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up 0 runs on 1 hit and had a strikeout. Andrew Brackman who really struggled last year after coming back from Tommy John surgery but has looked better in bullpens was bad today also. He pitched 1 inning giving up 3 hits and 2 runs. The other guys who pitched were Romulo Sanchez who pitched an inning giving up a hit and walk but 0 runs and Jason Hirsch who pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout.
The offense didn't do much at all. Reegie Corona, Brandon Laird, Colin Curtis,Austin Romine, Juan Miranda and Kevin Russo all had a hit. If you notice these are all minor league guys. Colin Curtis has been impressive so far this spring and Reegie Corona is a guy they like, he has been known for his defense. Austin Romine is right behind Jesus Montero as top catching prospect and Juan Miranda has had big numbers in AAA and Kevin Russo is a super utility type guy who has a outside chance of making the team. The lone RBI was a groundout off the bat of Ramiro Pena who is the frontrunner to be the utility guy again this year.
Francisco Cervelli obviously will not make the trip tomorrow, Mike Rivera will take his place. Amaury Sanit will also not make the trip after appearing in todays game. Dave Eiland confirmed today that Mariano Rivera, Damaso Marte and Chan Ho Park will all throw a batting practice session on Monday. They are the only pitchers who have yet to face live batters.
Andy Pettitte is pitching a 2 inning simulated game tomorrow and will move forward as if it was a real game. This will count as his first outing Dave Eiland said.
Nick Johnson took batting practice today and felt good afterward. He said "I took a few swings in the cage, felt loose."
Kei Igawa pitched well yesterday and Joe Girardi didn't rule out the idea of him creating a place for himself as a lefty reliever. I would bet against him ever pitching for the Yankees again though but you never know.
The Yankees will play the Twins tomorrow afternoon in Fort Myers. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 8:28 PM 0 comments

Joba steps up as Yanks fall down
The New York Yankees lost to the Philadelphia Phillies today by the score of 6-2. The big story of the day though was the way Joba Chamberlain pitched. He looked really good today and has now not eliminated himself from the 5th starters competition. I am going to recap the pitchers and then the hitters and then have some notes.
Andy Pettitte made the start for the Yankees, it was his first start against live competition. He pitched 4 innings and gave up 2 runs on 5 hits with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts. I would say it was a pretty good outing for being his first time out with real competition. He was throwing simulated games because of the rainouts. Damaso Marte pitched in relief of Andy and just had a terrible day. He didn't record an out and gave up 4 hits and 3 runs. He left the game after getting hit in the back by a Ryan Howard line drive. He should be ok but he is going to be sore for a while after that. Joba Chamberlain finished the game off with 3 innings giving up 2 hits and 1 run. He walked a batter and had 3 strikeouts.
Francisco Cervelli who survived a scare after getting beaned in the head is tearing it up offensively. He had 3 hits today and is batting 582 in the spring. He has the second highest average on the team. Brett Gardner had 2 hits and Nick Johnson had a hit and rbi. Mark Teixeira, Marcus Thames and Randy Winn each had a hit.
- Andy Pettitte had this to say "I threw a lot of good stuff, a lot of good pitches. My location I thought was fairly good. The balls that they hit, were just balls that I just didn't quite finish on a couple of them."
- Damaso Marte said he is fine after getting hit by a line drive off of Ryan Howards bat. Joe Girardi asked him if he had Bud Seligs signature on his back and he said no just seams.
- Andy Pettitte threw 55 pitches, 36 of them were strikes and Joba threw 47 in the game and about another 15 in the bullpen afterwards.
- Andy Pettitte and Joba Chamberlain are on the same schedule so Joe Girardi said that there is a good chance that Andy Pettitte will pitch in a minor league game in his next start so Joba can make another start
- Tomorrow night against the Rays none of the 5th starter candidates will pitch. Joe Girardi said we will see some of the relievers. Dave Robertson and Chan Ho Park are expected to pitch. Javier Vazquez will start the game.

Yanks Fall to Astros
The New York Yankees lost to the Houston Astros today by the score of 6-4. Alfredo Aceves got the start and for the first time this spring he struggled. He pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up 5 hits and 5 runs with 1 walk and 2 strikeouts. His numbers do look a little worse then he pitched though. Most of the damage was done at the end of his outing but this clearly was his worst start of the spring. Mark Melancon pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up 2 hits and a run with a strikeout. Boone Logan pitched another scoreless inning, he did give up a hit and he had a strikeout.
Brett Gardner had a couple of hits, one of them was a bunt single. The bunt hit was his 3rd of the spring, he had 2 all of last season. He has been hitting well lately and has his spring average up to 281, if he can hit like that then he will be a starting outfielder on this team. Mark Teixeira had a hit and walk and Alex Rodriguez continues to heat up as he had 2 hits and 2 rbi. Greg Golson and David Winfree each had a hit and Robinson Cano had a hit and rbi. Francisco Cervelli, Jon Weber, Kevin Russo, Ramiro Pena, Mike Rivera and Reid Gorecki all had a hit.
The Yankees will host the Detroit Tigers tomorrow afternoon at 1:00PM on the YES network. Here are some postgame notes from today:
Joe Girardi on the 5th starter competition being such a big topic "I think people are interested that is why, because once that is set, you iron out your bullpen from there. There's a lot kind of up in the air because you don't know who's in your bullpen because of the 5th starter spot. I'm not really suprised by the attention."
The other competition is for the last roster spot and it is between Marcus Thames and Jaime Hoffman and neither is playing well. Hoffman is batting 130 and Thames is hitting 107 this spring. Girardi said they aren't in that big of a hurry to make that decision. The 5th starter should be decided by Friday. The Lohud Blog has audio of Joe Girardi speaking with the media.

It is a blog about the New York Yankees and Baseball mainly and then other sports.
