Recap of Todays Yankee Action

The Yankees lost 3-2 to the Atlanta Braves at Disney. Ian Kennedy started for the Yanks and pitched 3 innings giving up 2 runs on 3 hits with 1 walk. Dan Giese also pitched 3 innings for the Yanks giving up 1 run on 2 hits with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts. Andrew Brackman pitched a perfect inning and Mark Melancon gave up a hit with 0 runs in his 1 inning. The offensive side not much happened Johnny Damon had a triple and a rbi, Nady and Berroa both had hits.

The Yankees are still waiting word out of Colorado about Arod who is undergoing an exam as I speak. Mariano will throw a bullpen tomorrow for the first time. Jorge Posada went through his throwing program today and appears to have gotten over that little setback he had the other day. Starting tomorrow the Yankees starters will go in line, Joba up first followed by CC,Wang,AJ,Pettitte. Joe Girardi said that the long man candidates Tomko,Giese and Aceves will continue to get innings. You would think that Hughes and Kennedy will be reassigned to the minor league complex then so they can continue on a regular rotation. Phil Coke will also get work, the Yanks envision him going anywhere from 1 batter to 2 innings. I am calling him the left handed version of Ramiro Mendoza. The Yankees will take on Team Canada tomorrow at Steinbrenner Field. I will be back later when I hear anything on Arod. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 6:11 PM 0 comments Labels: , , , , , ,

CC looks sharp

The New York Yankees defeated the Cincinatti Reds tonight by a score of 4-1. CC Sabathia pitched 7 2/3 innings giving up 1 run on 4 hits with 7 strikeouts. He basically retired the last 18 batters he faced. He had retired 16 in a row through the 7th and came back out for the 8th, he struck out the first guy who got to first when Shelly Duncan dropped the throw from Jose Molina but then got the next guy to ground into a double play. Damaso Marte pitched to one batter and got him out and Mariano Rivera closed it out with a perfect ninth inning getting one strikeout.

The offense was led by Mark Teixera was 2-3 with a rbi, Derek Jeter was 1-4 with a rbi. Johnny Damon was 0-4, Xaver Nady was 1-3 and Cody Ransom had a rbi.

CC Sabathia said tonight that other then getting his slider sharper he is ready to go. He threw 68 strikes out of 93 pitches and dominated the Reds. He said he felt great, he got 14 out of 23 outs on the ground and also had 7 strikeouts. That means that only 2 outs were in the air, Jorge Posada said " he is fun to catch." Tomorrow at 1 Chieng-Ming Wang will pitch for the AAA Yankees to Jorge Posada, Nick Swisher and Hideki Matsui are scheduled to play also to get some more at bats. Jeremie Guthrie was told tonight after having a rough outing that he will be facing CC Sabathia and the Yankees on opening day a week from Monday. Guthrie has an almost 8 era in 3 spring starts. The one other thing about tonight, is MO really human?? He only threw 5 pitches tonight and had a 1-2-3 9th inning. He has thrown 45 pitches this spring with 35 of them being strikes. Did he really have shoulder surgery, it doesn't appear that way, maybe this guy will pitch forever. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 10:24 PM 0 comments Labels: , , , , , , ,

Game 2: Yankees at Orioles

The Yankees lineup for tonight is the same as opening day.

Jeter(ss)
Damon(lf)
Teixera(1b)
Matsui(dh)
Posada(c)
Cano(2b)
Nady(rf)
Ransom(3b)
Gardner(cf)

Wang gets the start and is on the mound for the first time since last June when he got hurt in Houston rounding third base. He is 3-1 with a 5.13 era in 8 starts against the O's in his career and 2-0 with a 4.20 era in 4 starts at Camden Yards.

Robinson Cano for only the 13th time in his career walked twice on Monday. The Yankees on their opening day roster had players that come from 7 other countries, the only team with more was Atlanta which had 8. The Yankees have 12 foreign born players tied with the Mets and Red Sox for 2nd most in the majors only trailing Seattle who has 15. These stats come via Peter Abraham and his blog.

The Elias Sports Bureau had a interesting stat, on Monday Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera became the first trio of Yankees to play in 15 straight seasons(1995-2009).

Enjoy the game, I will be back later with some reaction, comments, opinions. Hopefully Wang will get the team back on track before some people jump off a bridge. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 3:55 PM 0 comments Labels: , , , , , , ,

Oakland Athletics at New York Yankees The lineup for todays game has been posted and here it is: Jeter(ss) Damon(lf) Teixera(1b) Posada(c) Cano(2b) Swisher(rf) Matsui(dh) Ransom(3b) Gardner(cf) Some notes courtesy of Peter Abraham: The Yankees are batting 125 with runners in scoring position at home so far this year. Brian Bruney has retired 20 straight batters, his last seven outings 6.2 perfect innings striking out twelve. Big Tex the last three games is three for nine with two homeruns, four rbis and three walks. I say that cortisone shot has seemed to help him. He needs four more hits for one thousand in his career. The Yankees have homered in seven straight games. Today is Johnny Damons one thousandth career game and tomorrow is Derek Jeters. The Athletics are 2-5 with a 202 batting average against lefties this year. Posted by Gary W. Andy and Mo tie record as Yanks win The New York Yankees defeated the Oakland Athletics by the score of five to three tonight. Andy Pettitte got the start and pitched seven strong innings giving up two runs. Brian Bruney actually gave up a couple of hits and a run in the eighth but got the ball to MO with the two run lead. Mariano Rivera shut the door in the ninth giving up a single but that was it. Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera tied Dennis Eckersely and Bob Welch record of most combined wins/saves from teammates with fifty-seven. Johnny Damon hit a solo homerun and had another RBI for the offense, Mark Teixera had a walk and RBI single and Brett Gardner had a two run single. He also made a great catch in centerfield robbing Jason Giambi of a extra base hit and had a stolen base. Derek Jeter had a couple of hits and a walk and Jorge Posada went two for four. Hideki Matsui went two for three with a walk as he has looked better the last couple of days so hopefully they can just watch his knees and give him some rest when he needs it and he will be ok. Cody Ransom did have a hit but he looks lost at the plate and isn't playing great defense either, I wonder if when A-rod gets back if he goes back to the bench or to AAA-Scranton and they may bring someone else up or leave Ramiro Pena as the utility infielder. The Yankees play a 1:00pm game tomorrow with CC Sabathia on the hill against young lefty Brett Anderson. They will have a off day on Thursday and then head up to Boston for the first installment of the Rivalry 2009. Posted by Gary W. Another sweep as streak hits 9

Joba Chamberlain started and didn't make it through the first inning but not due to ineffectiveness rather taking a shot off the knee. X-rays are negative though and it was diagnosed as a bruised knee, he should make his next start. Alfredo Aceves came in to get the last out of the first and pitch the next 3 innings giving up 0 runs on 3 hits with a walk and strikeout. Jon Albaladejo pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up 4 runs and 5 hits with 2 strikeouts. Jose Veras pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up 2 hits and nothing else and MO pitched the ninth for the save. It was a 1-2-3 inning for MO with a strikeout.

The offense was led by Robinson Cano who had 3 hits and 3 rbi's batting in the #2 hole. Derek Jeter had a hit and a walk, Big Tex had 2 hits a walk and rbi. Hideki Matsui hit a solo homerun and Nick Swisher had a hit and 2 walks. Melky Cabrera had a hit and 2 rbi's. The Yankees broke out to a big lead and Aceves looked great when he was out there but as soon as he came out it got interesting. Phil Coke wasn't available tonight but should be tomorrow and the Yankees haven't used Bruney in 2 nights which I find interesting. The Yankees will begin a 3 game series to close out their homestand with Philadelphia tomorrow. A.J. Burnett will be on the hill against Brett Myers. A.J. needs to get back in the winning column here, he pitched really well last time out but didn't get any run support. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 10:41 PM 0 comments Labels: , , , , , , , ,

Yanks/Cleveland recap

The New York Yankees defeated the Cleveland Indians by a score of 3-1 tonight. The Yankees now sit alone in first place for the first time since the last game of the 2006 season. Andy Pettitte started and gutted out 5 plus innings, leaving in the sixth with what is being called lower back stiffness. Alfredo Aceves came in and got out of a bases loaded no out jam by allowing only one run and then pitching 2 more scoreless innings. Mo came in and got the save in the ninth. Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera now have the most win/save combo in major league history with 59. Bob Welch and Dennis Eckersely previously held the record. Derek Jeter h.ad a couple of hits and so did Jorge Posda in his return. Mark Teixeira had a rbi groundout and Nick Swisher had a sac fly. A-rod had a hit, the Yankees will take on Cleveland tomorrow night with CC Sabathia on the mound in his return to Cleveland. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 12:37 AM 0 comments Labels: , , , ,

Yanks sweep away Mets

The New York Yankees defeated the New York Mets tonight by the score of 4-2. Chien-Ming Wang got the start and finally recorded his first win of the season. He went 5 1/3 innings giving up 2 runs on 4 hits with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts. I don't know what to think of him because that is pretty good but he just doesn't go deep into game anymore, at least he got a win finally and hopefully can build on that. Phil Coke got a strikeout on the only guy he faced and Phil Hughes pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up one walk with a strikeout. Brian Bruney got two outs in the eighth but also walked two guys and Mariano Rivera got the final 4 outs for his 500th career save. Mo is now only the second guy in history with 500 saves, the other is Trevor Hoffman. Mariano Rivera also got his first Rbi of his career with a bases loaded walk.

The Yankees didn't do much offensively, A-rod had a single and 3 walks, Jorge Posada had a hit and rbi and Mark Teixeira had a hit and 2 rbi's. Derek Jeter had a hit and 3 walks in his return from illness. The Yankees are now 3 games behind Boston in the AL East. They do lead the wildcard standings. The Yankees will have a day off tomorrow and then start a 3 game series with Seattle at the Stadium on Tuesday. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 12:06 AM 0 comments Labels: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Mariano Rivera-Simply the Best

Mariano Rivera notched his 500th save last night becoming only the second pitcher in history to accomplish that and made me stop and think back. I am 31 years old and have seen pretty much every save that MO has ever had, i am a diehard fan and go or watch just about every single game. Mariano Rivera started out as a skinny little kid that was a starting pitcher in the minor leagues. He came up in 1995 and if Buck Showalter knew what he had in MO things may have drastically been different for lots of people. The Yankees lost a thrilling division round playoff to the Seattle Mariners that year in 5 games. Buck Showalter didn't know what he had in MO and if he did the Yankees probably would have won and maybe gone on to win the World Series and there would of been no Joe Torre and maybe not all those championships but who knows. Mariano Rivera failed as a starting pitcher and was converted to relief and thank goodness Buck and Gene Michael and some others saved him because if it was up to George Steinbrenner they would of traded him to get a shortstop because they were so worried about a kid named Derek Jeter being the starting shortstop for the Yankees. It is really funny how all these years later they are still teammates and both headed to the Hall Of Fame. Mariano Rivera started out as a setup man in 1996 for John Wetteland and made the games 6 innings when Mo would come in for the 7th and 8th and just blow people away and hand the ball off to Wetteland for the save, the Yankees won the World Series that year and next year Wetteland was gone and MO became the closer which he has stayed ever since. Mariano is such a humble man that he didn't even think about that in the offseason until they called him up and said you are going to be our closer and he said ok I will do my best.

Mariano Rivera is such a cool customer and never shows too much emotion either way, he acts the same all the time, no matter if it is playoffs, World Series, regular season, spring training. It is funny that now you have Jonathan Papelbon, K-rod even Joba Chamberlain who have some histrionics to them and you still have MO just simply walking towards the catcher and shaking hands. The game last night was a time when he truly could of let loose with emotion but he did what he always does and of course everyone of his teammates walked up to him and hugged him, Derek Jeter had a moment with him and Jorge Posada also had a nice embrace, these guys have been together for a long time and it was great to see. The thing that makes MO great other then him just saving all of these games and being the best in the postseason and never sweating even after he does blow games is how humble he is and what a great person he is. They asked him about saving 500 and what he means and he still thanked go and all of his teammates, it is truly a pleasure to have witnessed his whole career and being able to tell my kids and grandkids one day that i saw the greatest closer of all time pitch. I don't know what will happen when he finally decides to hang it up but it will be a sad sad day. I definitely would love to be there the day he is in Cooperstown inducted into the Baseball Hall of FAme. Congratulations MO you are simply the best. Posted by Gary W. Yanks defeat Mariners

The New York Yankees won their sixth game in a row tonight beating the Seattle Mariners 8-5. Mariano threw out the ceremonial first pitch and closed out the game with his 501st save. Joba Chamberlain got the start and threw 5 1/3 innings giving up 3 runs. He gave up 9 hits, what I don't get about him is he has good stuff but as a starter he just doesn't challenge guys enough when he should, he tends to nitpick with 2 strikes and ends up walking guys and then gets into trouble. Phil Coke came in and got the two guys out he faced and Phil Hughes pitched a 1-2-3 7th inning on 9 pitches. Brian Bruney struggled in the 8th giving up 2 runs on 3 hits. The big question is why did Phil Hughes not pitch the 8th but Joe Girardi said that Bruney is the 8th inning guy but sometimes you just got to go with the hot hand. MO finished it off with a 1-2-3 ninth for his 501st save.

The offense saw A-rod hit a 2 run bomb and draw a walk, he just missed another 2 run homer in his last at bat. Derek Jeter had a 2 run single. Melky Cabrera had a hit and 3 rbi's. Johnny Damon had 2 hits and a walk, Nick Swisher had a bun single, Hideki Matsui had a double and a walk. Big Tex had a hit and got robbed of another hit and Robinson Cano had 2 hits but he still isn't getting the clutch hit. The Yankees will try and make it 2 straight over the Mariners and 7 in a row overall tomorrow night with Andy Pettitte on the mound. The game is scheduled to start at 7 on the Yes network. Yanks keep rolling

The New York Yankees defeated the Seattle Mariners tonight by the score of 4-2. Andy Pettitte got the start and pitched great going 7 innings giving up 6 hits and 2 runs with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts. Alfredo Aceves came in to get one out and then Phil Coke got a groundout and strikeout. Mariano Rivera had a 1-2-3 ninth for his 20th save of the year and 502nd of his career. Phil Hughes was warming up but I found it very strange that Alfredo Aceves pitched in the 8th, why not Phil Hughes???

The offense was led by A-rod hitting a 2 run homerun, he also had a single. Mark Teixeira had 2 hits, Derek Jeter had a hit and Johnny Damon had a hit, rbi and walk. Robinson Cano and Nick Swisher each had a hit and Melky Cabrera hit a solo homerun. The Yankees were crisp defensively making no errors. The Yankees are really on a roll now and will look for the sweep tomorrow with CC Sabathia on the mound. Jose Molina is going to start a rehab assignment with Scranton tomorrow. Posted by Gary W. Yanks win 2nd in a row

The New York Yankees defeated the Detroit Tigers today by the score of 2-1. This was a great pitching matchup of CC Sabathia and Justin Verlander and they didn't disappoint. CC Sabathia struggled a little bit early but was able to get out of trouble and settle down finishing with 7 shutout innings. He gave up 5 hits with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts. Alfredo Aceves came in to pitch the 8th inning and gave up a solo homerun but preservenind the lead. Mariano came on in the ninth and pitched a 1-2-3 inning for his 25th save.

The offense didn't do much against Verlander, A-rod hit a solo homerun to right field that barely got out in the seventh and Melky Cabrera had a infield single for a RBI in the same inning. Derek Jeter had a couple of hits and Johnny Damon had a double. Nick Swisher had a double and that was about all the the offense for the game. The Yankees will go for the sweep tomorrow with Joba Chamberlain on the mound against Edwin Jackson it is also Old Timers Day with the festivities starting on Yes at 11:30AM. Posted by Gary W. Yanks win again take over first place

The New York Yankees won their fifth game in a row tonight and in doing so they took over sole possession of first place. They now lead the Red Sox by 1 game in the AL East. Sergio Mitre got the start and pitched fairly well going 5 2/3 innings giving up 8 hits, 4 runs with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts. Alfredo Aceves pitched 1 1/3 scoreless giving up 0 hits, 0 walks and 0 strikeouts. Phil Coke came on and pitched a scoreless 8th and Mo finished it off with a 1-2-3 ninth for his 26th save.

The offense really didn't do much again but A-rod had a big 2 run single and also added a walk and stolen base. Cody Ransom had a double and a couple of walks with a stolen base. Johnny Damon had a rbi single, just missing the 200th homerun of his career. Robinson Cano had a couple of hits with one of them being a 2 run homerun. The Yankees once again played very good defense. They will look for their 2nd straight sweep tomorrow afternoon with A.J. Burnett on the mound. Posted by Gary W. Yanks beat Halladay and the Jays

The New York Yankees defeated the Toronto Blue Jays by the score of 5-3 tonight. Roy Halladay started for the Jays and you figured it would be a tough night but the Yankees jumped him for 2 runs early and then after settling in they hit 3 solo homeruns late off of him. Johnny Damon and Mark Teixeira went back to back in the 8th and Matsui hit one in the ninth. Andy Pettitte was good again although more balls were hit hard today and he did have an inning where he struggled with his control walking a couple. He ended up pitching 6 2/3 giving up 1 run with 4 walks and 6 strikeouts. Phil Hughes got the last out in the seventh and after giving up back to back singles to start the 8th he struck out the next two and gave way to MO. Mariano was not sharp at all tonight giving up a 2 run double before escaping. Then in the ninth he gave up another bloop hit and got away with a hanger to Bautista who hit the ball to dead center, if he hit it anywhere else it is a tie game. He was down in the count 0-2 to the final hitter and he popped up on another bad pitch.

The Yankees offensively hit 3 homeruns for the second time in a row off of Roy Halladay, I guess they finally have him figured out. Big Tex, Hideki Matsui and Johnny Damon had solo homeruns. Robinson Cano had 2 hits, A-rod and Big Tex each had 2 hits and a rbi. Tomorrow they will face a guy whose name I can't say and can't spell so I don't think the Yankees have ever seen him and Sergio Mitre may be making his final start for the Yankees. I would think the Yankees have to score some runs to win this game but we will see what happens. If they win they will be in first place to start the big 4 game series with the Red Sox. As I am writing this the Sox and Rays are tied in the bottom of the 10th inning. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 10:40 PM 0 comments Labels: , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Yanks not sleepless in Seattle

http://gmarchese.blogspot.comThe New York Yankees defeated the Seattle Mariners last night by the score of 5-2. Sergio Mitre got the start and didn't pitch too bad going 5 1/3 innings giving up 2 runs on 7 hits. Dave Robertson came on and pitched 1 scoreless inning giving up 2 hits but striking out 3. Phil Coke pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings giving up 0 hits with 3 strikeouts. Mariano Rivera pitched the ninth for the save giving up a hit and walk but also striking out two.

The offense was led by Derek Jeter who had 2 hits and 2 rbi's and Robinson Cano who had 2 hits. A-rod had a hit and a couple of walks. Nick Swisher had a 2 run homerun, Mark Teixeira had a hit, Jerry Hairston Jr had a hit and Jose Molina had a couple of hits and also a big play in the seventh throwing out Ichiro trying to steal third. The Yankees just keep rolling along now 7 1/2 games ahead of the Red Sox for first place in the AL East. Joba Chamberlain will get the start today after all and then not pitch again for another 8 days.

The Yankees are now 23-6 since the all star break which is the best record in their history post all star break.

Mariano Rivera has now completed 31 consecutive save chances matching his career high which he last accomplished in 2005.

The Yankees bullpen has given up 1 run in their last 20 2/3 innings, this is just dominant and with that type of pitching you would expect to have a run like the Yankees have had. The other thing the Yankees pitchers do for the most part is get a lot of strikeouts, the bullpen had 8 last night and CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte had 10 in back to back games. Posted by Gary W. Yanks take series in Boston

The New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox tonight by the score of 8-4. They won the series 2 games to one and have won 6 of their last 7 games against the Red Sox to build a 7 1/2 game lead in the AL East. The Yankees finished their 10 game, 3 city roadtrip at 7-3. CC Sabathia got the start and pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up 4 runs, 3 earned although it could of easily been 2 with better defense. Phil Hughes came on to finish the seventh and complete the 8th giving up 1 hit with a strikeouts. Mariano came on in the ninth giving up a walk but had 2 strikeouts.

The offense exploded for 5 homeruns off Josh Beckett. Derek Jeter hit a homerun on the first pitch he saw of the game. He also added a single. Hideki Matsui hit 2 homeruns, A-rod had a 2 run homer and a rbi groundout. Johnny Damon had a couple of hits, Big Tex had a hit and rbi and Robinson Cano had a solo homerun. Jose Molina contributed a hit. The Yankees will be off tomorrow and then open a 3 game series with the Texas Rangers who trail the Red Sox by 1 game in the wildcard race. Posted by Gary W. Andy not only dandy but almost perfect

Andy Pettitte was awesome tonight coming 7 outs away from a perfect game. He had 2 outs and no one on in the 7th inning when a hard grounder was hit to Jerry Hairston Jr. at third and he booted it. The next guy got a hit and then he got out of the inning. If Jerry Hairston Jr. made that play you wonder what would of happened as he would of been in the 8th inning with a perfect game. He ended up giving up a run on 2 hits with 0 walks and 8 strikeouts. Brian Bruney came on in the ninth giving up 2 hits and getting one out before Mariano Rivera had to come in for his 33rd save in a row and 37th of the season.

The Yankees offense was led by Nick Swisher who had 3 hits and a rbi. Derek Jeter had a hit and a walk and Johnny Damon had a rbi single. Mark Teixeira had a hit and a walk, Robinson Cano had 2 hits and 2 rbi's and Melky Cabrera had 2 hits. The story of the game clearly though was Andy Pettitte, he completed 8 innings for the first time this season. I really thought he might pitch the perfect game, that is how good he looked tonight but it wasn't meant to be and he was good about it after the game. He said that Jerry Hairston wouldn't look at him and finally he had to go up to him and just hug him and say it is ok. He also said he told him I didn't want to pitch 9 innings anyway. The Yankees will play game 2 tomorrow with A.J. Burnett on the mound, A.J. is trying to get a win for the first time in 7 starts. Posted by Gary W. Yanks and Rays play 2

The New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays are playing a day night doubleheader today in the Bronx. It is Labor Day and what is better then a baseball doubleheader, well the fact that Derek Jeter could also break the all time franchise record for hits currently held by Lou Gehrig. Derek Jeter needs 3 more to tie and 4 to break it, so there is a pretty good chance he could do it today. CC Sabathia pitches the daygame with A.J. Burnett pitching the nightcap. A.J. needs to get a win as he has gone 6 starts without a victory and hasn't been pitching well at all. Here are the pregame notes and linup via Peter Abraham for Game 1.

The Yankees start today with a 7 1/2 game lead on Boston for first place in the AL East and a 5 game lead on Anaheim for best record and homefield advantage.

The Red Sox will finish their series with the White Sox today and Anaheim with K.C.

It is Suzyn Waldmans birthday, happy birthday to her and continued success.

CC Sabathia is 6-0 with a 2.45 era in his last 7 starts.

Mo is cleared to pitch after missing 5 games with a sore groin. They may only use him in one game and Hughes may be the closer in the other, which doesn't seem to be a problem as he has done so well in that role.

Shelly Duncan and Brett Gardner were recalled from Scranton, Gardner has been out with a broken thumb and they missed his speed, it will also help Melky who has been hot lately but seemed to be worn down before this recent hot streak. Shelly Duncan is a fan favorite so good for him. On a personal note him and Francisco Cervelli who is also up took pictures with my daughter a couple of weeks ago in Scranton so it is great to see them with the Yankees.

Yankees Lineup:
Jeter(SS)
Swisher(RF)
Tex(1B)
A-rod(3B)
Cano(2B)
Posada(C)
Hinske(DH)
Cabrera(LF)

Yanks love pie

The New York Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Rays tonight by the score of 3-2. Nick Swisher hit a walkoff homerun in the bottom of the ninth to give the Yankees the victory. Chad Gaudin got the start and pitched really well going 6 strong and then tiring in the seventh. He gave up 1 run on 6 hits with 6 strikeouts. Phil Hughes who has been lights out gave up a solo homerun in the eighth but then Mo had a 1-2-3 ninth to set up the heroics. The Yankees were pretty much shutdown by David Price who was really good tonight showing the promise that he has. Nick Swisher hit a monster homerun to left field and A-rod had a rbi single. Derek Jeter went hitless once again disappointing many people and going through his longest hitless stretch of the season. He is now 0 for his last 13 and did not make himself available to the media after the game. That is very unusual for him so I wonder if it is getting to him a little bit. The Yankees magic number is now 15 and they are 40 games over 500.

David Price became the first pitcher to strike out Jeter 3 times in a game since Curt Shilling did it on April 19, 2004.

Nick Swisher's 2 homeruns were the 3rd time this season he has done it from both sides of the plate.

Johnny Damon reached 100 runs scored for the 10th time in his career.

Dave Robertson will meet with Dr. James Andrews on Thursday in Florida, that is never a good thing. This kid was really coming on this year so lets hope it is nothing too serious.

Chad Gaudin has allowed 4 runs in 14 innings as a starter for the Yanks and they are 3-0 in those games.

Joba Chamberlain will be on the mound tomorrow against Jeff Niemann. The Yankees will go for the 4 game sweep. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 11:08 PM 0 comments Labels: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Wednesday, September 9, 2009 A Historic Night in the Bronx The New York Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Rays by the score of 4-2 but that was just a sidebar. Derek Jeter collected three hits to tie Lou Gehrig for most hits in franchise history with 2.721. It was a great moment as he stood on first and the whole crowd gave him a standing ovation, the whole dugout was out on the top steps and even the Rays stood cheering on the top steps of their dugout. Derek Jeter did tip his helmet to the crowd and point up at his parents and yes his girlfriend Minka Kelly was also there. It is fitting that on this night his best friend Jorge Posada would have the game winning hit a pinch hit three run homerun in the 8th inning. Brian Bruney and Phil Coke closed out the game in the ninth inning. The Yankees completed a 4 game sweep and moved to 41 games over 500. The story of the game though is Derek Jeter. It really is amazing to have watched his whole career and start to realize how great he is. The thing about Derek Jeter is he is always about the team and winning and the next day. He never steps back and realizes what he has accomplished and I think that is part of the fans not doing it either. When you look at Derek Jeter you look at the intangibles and the rings and I think it is only fitting that he tied this record on a day the Yankees won the game so he can look at it as well I helped the team win. He said in the postgame how it was awkward for him when he tied the record because the team was losing at the time and it is hard for him to recognize an individual achievement. The stadium though was truly rocking and it was amazing to see his family in his box react and also his teammates and the opposing team, it showed how much of a class act he is when the other team was up cheering for him. The postgame was great to watch also as he handled himself well as always, I really enjoyed hearing Jorge and Andy and Mo as they have been together all these years and you can see how proud and emotional they were. I am going to the game Friday and I can't wait, it is going to be so electric and I can't imagine what it will be like if he does get a hit to break it. I have no doubt he will do it friday and wouldn't that be fitting for him to accomplish it on 9/11. Congratulations to #2 Derek Jeter for tying the record and breaking it soon. He is on his way to Cooperstown and being immortalized in Monument Park and it has been so enjoyable to watch him all these years. It isn't over yet and Derek has many more years left and more memories and it would be great to get the record on Friday and finish it off next month with another World Championship. Yanks beat Angels at their own game

The New York Yankees defeated the Angels 5-3 tonight in a playoff type of game. Joba Chamberlain got the start and pitched 4 good innings. He gave up 1 run on 4 hits with a couple of strikeouts. Alfredo Aceves pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up 2 hits, 1 run with 2 walks and a couple of strikeouts. Phil Coke pitched a very important 2/3 of an inning giving up 0 runs on 0 hits with a strikeout. Phil Hughes pitched the 8th and got himself in trouble with a couple of hits and a walk to load the bases with no outs and then got a double play and a soft line drive. He gave up the lead but showed great poise to get out of it without allowing anymore. Mariano gave up a walk but nothing else in locking down his 36th straight save.

The offense was led by Mark Teixeira who had a single, double and triple. He had a couple of rbi's. Hideki Matsui had a hit and a walk, Robinson Cano and Nick Swisher each had 2 hits and a rbi. The biggest play of the game though was Brett Gardner coming off of the bench and pinch running for Mark Teixeira in the 8th inning. He stole third and scampered home on the wild throw to give the Yankees the lead before they tacked on another run. The Yankees beat the Angels at their own game and that is great to see. The Yankees have beaten the Angels 3 out of 4 at home this season and are 0-3 in Anaheim so homefield is huge as they may see them again in the ALCS. The Yankees begin a 2 game series with Toronto tomorrow, Sergio Mitre will take on Roy Halladay. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 11:02 PM 0 comments Labels: , , , , , , , ,

Yanks finally get a win in Anaheim

The New York Yankees beat the Anaheim Angels by the score of 6-5 last night in Anaheim. This was the first win for the Yankees out there this season, they are now 1-4 in Anaheim. The Yankees now own a 6 game lead over the Red Sox and 5 1/2 over the Angels, the magic number for clinching the division is at 6. Chad Gaudin got the start and was very good for 4 and 2/3 innings and then it totally unraveled. He gave up a couple of runs and had to be pulled from the game. Alfredo Aceves got into trouble in the 6th but thanks to A-rod making a great diving stop on Vlady Guerrero the Yankees got out of the inning with a 5-4 lead. The Yankees had the lead when Phil Hughes got out of a jam in the 7th and came out for the 8th but Robinson Cano made an error and then Jorge Posada had a throwing error so there was a runner on 3rd with no outs and the Angels did end up tying the game but Phil Hughes struck out Vlady and Tori Hunter with a runner in scoring position. Brett Gardner led off the ninth and once again gave the Angels a taste of their own medicine leading off with a single and stealing second. Derek Jeter walked and Johnny Damon bunted them over. The Angels made a interesting move by walking Mark Teixeira intentionally and loading the bases for A-rod who on the first pitch smacked a semi deep line drive that scored the run and Mo closed it out for the save. The Yankees will try to win the series this afternoon with A.J. Burnett on the hill.

The Yankees did not celebrate making the playoffs as they chose to wait and hopefully clinch the division at home and then celebrate. Joe Girardi met with them in the clubhouse briefly congratulating them according to Peter Abraham but told them they have a lot more to accomplish and this was only the first step. It would be great if they clinch at home against Boston this weekend. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 8:03 AM 0 comments Labels: , , , , , , , , , ,

Yanks on verge of clinching

The New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox once again this afternoon. They won the game by the score of 3-0 and now have won 8 out of 9 against them since starting 0-8. CC Sabathia got the start and was just simply brilliant, he pitched 7 scoreless innings giving up 1 hit. CC had 8 strikeouts. He has been pitching lights out and isn't working on such a heavy load like he was at the end of last year with the Brewers which should bode well for the postseason. Phil Hughes pitched a perfect 8th with some help from Mark Teixeira who made a brilliant diving stop, Hughes also had 2 strikeouts and Mariano finished off the game with his 43rd save.

The offense had runners on all day long but couldn't get the big hit until Robinson Cano hit a solo homerun in the 7th and Johnny Damon added a bloop 2 run single in the ninth inning. The Yankees with a win tomorrow will clinch the AL East and homefield advantage. I wonder what kind of wild celebration it will be, could we see some pie amongst all the champagne. The Yankees will also win 100 games with their next win which is very hard to do in baseball now. The Yankees also got good news on Dave Robertson who threw before the game and feels fine, he should get in some games next week before the postseason. The Yankees only question now will be who starts game 2 A.J. or Andy, it looks like they are leaning towards Andy but we shall see. Posted by Gary W. Yanks are AL East Champs

These pictures say it all, there are a lot more out there on the web but I thought I would just post a couple. The New York Yankees are the AL East division Champs and have homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. I think it was fitting that Andy Pettitte got the win and Mariano closed it out for him like they have done so many times before. Derek Jeter got a couple of more hits. The scene was great as they had a nice celebration but kept mentioning to Kim Jones on YES that they aren't finished and this is the first of their goals. I really feel confident with this team going into the playoffs with CC Sabathia being the ace of this staff and Pettitte and A.J. Burnett falling behind him and a good bullpen with a deep lineup. This team should beat Detroit or Minnesota because they are just better then them. The ALCS will be fun if they make it there because they will play one of their two rivals in the Angels or Red Sox. The Yankees will take this last week to rest some guys and get Dave Robertson into 2 or 3 games and make sure he is ready to go for the postseason. Joba will make his last start on Wednesday and that will be important also as they want to see him pitch well again before putting him in the bullpen for the first round and him being the 4th starter after that. The Yankees will enjoy this now but in another week get back to work and focus on winning 11 more as they strive for Title 27.

Yankees win a classic

The New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim last night or early this morning depending on how you look at it by the score of 4-3. This game was truly a classic, leading up to this game everyone was saying how they wouldn't get it in and all the weather problems and scenarios that would or could take place and not only did they get it in they played 13 innings. A.J. Burnett got the start and was really really good except for the 5th inning where he gave up 2 runs but got out of a jam, it could of been a lot worse. He ended up pitching 6 1/3 innings giving up 2 runs on 3 hits with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. Phil Coke came in to finish the 7th and walked the first batter but then struck out Bobby Abreu and Joba Chamberlain finished the inning off with a strikeout. It looked for a while that the 5th inning would really come back to haunt the Yankees. They gave up a 2-0 lead and then had 1st and second no outs and Derek Jeter at the plate. I was expecting him to bunt to move the runners over with Damon and Teixeira coming up but instead he bounced into a 1-6-3 double play. Johnny Damon stranded the runner on third and for a while the Yankees couldn't get anything going after that against Joe Saunders and the Angels bullpen who were outstanding. The Yankees bullpen was also outstanding as Phil Hughes pitched 2/3 of an inning scoreless and then Mariano Rivera pitched 2 1/3 scorless innings. He gave up one hit and had 2 strikeouts. Alfredo Aceves pitched a inning and a third and actually gave up the lead in the 11th but A-rod answered back off Angels closer Brian Fuentes with a game tying homerun to rightfield. A-rod now has 3 homeruns and 8 rbi's in 5 games this postseason. All of his homeruns have tied the game for the Yankees and all were in the 7th inning or later. Damaso Marte retired the one batter he faced and Dave Robertson pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings giving up 1 hit, 2 walks and he had a strikeout. The Yankees won it in the bottom of the 13th when Jerry Hairston Jr. who was the last player on the bench led off with a single. Brett Gardner bunted him over to second and then Robinson Cano was intentionally walked. Melky Cabrera came to bat and hit one to the right side that looked like it may get through and be a game winning single but Izturis the second baseman made a nice play to get to it but for some reason attempted to throw to second, threw wildly and it went into left field and Hairston came around third and scored the game winning run. The Yankees now lead the series 2 games to none with the next 3 if needed in Anaheim. Andy Pettitte will be on the mound against Jered Weaver tomorrow afternoon at 4:15. This game was a classic lasting 5 hours and 10 minutes seeing 8 pitchers for the Yankees and 5 for the Angels. There was a blown save by Fuentes, Mariano being Mariano and A-rod being the hero again. There was a lot of great pitching and some clutch hitting with some shoddy defense on both sides, I think the weather had a lot to do with it and I am sure they will all be happy they will be in warm and sunny southern California now for a few days. Recap of todays Yankees game and some Notes

The New York Yankees took it on the chin today losing to the Toronto Blue Jays by the score of 9-1. The story of the game though wasn't the final outcome it was Francisco Cervelli getting beaned in the head and leaving the game. He did seem ok on the field and was helped off of it but did get up under his own power. He was taken to a local hospital for precautionary testing which included a CT scan. The tests were negative and he said he was feeling a little dizzy and had a headache but he should be back in a couple of days. The story of the game on the field would be A.J. Burnett making his first start.

He wasn't great but he was happy that he got his work in and did what he wanted to do. He was throwing only a fastball and changeup and as Joe Girardi said, his out pitch is the curveball and if you take that away, it is a different pitcher. He wasn't concerned with the results, just that he got his work in and starts to feel good about his changeup. His line on the day was 1 2/3 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs and 1 walk. He guessed that he threw 10 changeups on the day. Here is what Jorge Posada said about his outing "He's starting it down, that's the big thing. He's finishing it well. There was one of them that was up, hit off the end of the bat, but I thought he did a great job."

Boone Logan was very impressive again, in his debut he retired all 4 batters he faced and 3 were lefties. Today he pitched 2 perfect innings with 2 strikeouts. I know it is early but he is really making a case to be the second lefty if the yankees carry one. Jonathan Albaladejo on the flip side was just awful, it was actually painful to watch. He got torched for 7 hits and 5 runs in 1/3 of an inning. He also walked a batter. That is his second bad outing, I don't think he will be making the team out of spring training this year. Mark Melancon continues to impress, the Yankees still have high hopes for him. He pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up 0 runs on 1 hit and had a strikeout. Andrew Brackman who really struggled last year after coming back from Tommy John surgery but has looked better in bullpens was bad today also. He pitched 1 inning giving up 3 hits and 2 runs. The other guys who pitched were Romulo Sanchez who pitched an inning giving up a hit and walk but 0 runs and Jason Hirsch who pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout.

The offense didn't do much at all. Reegie Corona, Brandon Laird, Colin Curtis,Austin Romine, Juan Miranda and Kevin Russo all had a hit. If you notice these are all minor league guys. Colin Curtis has been impressive so far this spring and Reegie Corona is a guy they like, he has been known for his defense. Austin Romine is right behind Jesus Montero as top catching prospect and Juan Miranda has had big numbers in AAA and Kevin Russo is a super utility type guy who has a outside chance of making the team. The lone RBI was a groundout off the bat of Ramiro Pena who is the frontrunner to be the utility guy again this year.

Francisco Cervelli obviously will not make the trip tomorrow, Mike Rivera will take his place. Amaury Sanit will also not make the trip after appearing in todays game. Dave Eiland confirmed today that Mariano Rivera, Damaso Marte and Chan Ho Park will all throw a batting practice session on Monday. They are the only pitchers who have yet to face live batters.

Andy Pettitte is pitching a 2 inning simulated game tomorrow and will move forward as if it was a real game. This will count as his first outing Dave Eiland said.

Nick Johnson took batting practice today and felt good afterward. He said "I took a few swings in the cage, felt loose."

Kei Igawa pitched well yesterday and Joe Girardi didn't rule out the idea of him creating a place for himself as a lefty reliever. I would bet against him ever pitching for the Yankees again though but you never know.

The Yankees will play the Twins tomorrow afternoon in Fort Myers. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 8:28 PM 0 comments Labels: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Some postgame Yankees Notes

Sam Borden had a interesting post on Joba and Phil Hughes on the Lohud Yankees Blog. If you haven't seen it check it out at http://yankees.lhblogs.com/. He is saying the reason you shouldn't get hung up in spring stats which I for the most part don't do is because there are things you don't know. Joba Chamberlain for instance has been told to work inside this spring so in that bad inning that is all he was doing no matter the results and Phil Hughes has been told work on your changeup and that is what he was doing when he gave up a homerun today. The point is if you say this guy did this and this one did that it doesn't really mean anything because in the season they wouldn't be doing the same thing. The most important thing is for them to stay healthy and get their arm stength up. The Yankees know what they are doing and are going to determine who they feel is the best 5th starter and who belongs in the bullpen. I know there will always be debate but the Yankees are looking at certain things and it isn't just the stats, I have a hunch they want Hughes to be the 5th starter and they know Joba will be good in the 8th inning role and future closer. I think this is how it will wind up and Aceves will fill the role he did last season with Mitre or Gaudin as the longman and the other getting traded or released.

There is also audo of both Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes on the Lohud Yankees blog. I forgot to mention this earlier but the Yankees announced yesterday that they will have a Bowl Game at Yankee Stadium. The game will be held on December 30, 2010 and broadcast on ESPN. It will be called the New Era Pinstriped Bowl.

Joe Girardi mentioned this morning that today will be the last tune up start, after today he will really start juding the pitchers for the 5th starter spot. Joe Girardi has been using a lot of different lineups over the past few days and said sometime towards the end of spring training he would want his regular lineup together for an extended period of time. March 16th is the day after an off day and Girardi said he will have all his regulars playing. That is supposed to be Mariano Riveras first appearance also of the spring.

Andy Pettitte, Javier Vazquez, Damaso Marte and Mariano Rivera all threw in the bullpen today. They stayed behind in Tampa and didn't make the trip. Cervelli caught Pettitte and Alfredo Aceves and I haven't heard otherwise so I am sure it went well and that he should be ready to catch in a game on Friday. Jesus Montero caught Javier Vazquez and Chad Gaudin. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 5:21 PM 0 comments Labels: , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Yankees Off Day

The Yankees were off today so it was very quiet in Tampa. The Yankees did send 2 more pitchers down to minor league camp today. The pitchers were Hector Noesi and Ivan Nova. The total amount of players in major league camp is now 52. If you are looking for some good minor league stuff then check out the Lohud Yankees Blog. Chad Jennings is the main beat writer and he had spend the last 7 years in Scranton covering the AAA team there. It was the Phillies at first but then became the Yankees. He was at minor league camp today with the Big Club being off. He wrote some good notes on his blog which can be found at http://yankees.lhblogs.com. It will be interesting to see if there is any A-rod news tomorrow. I hope he met with the FEDS today on the off day and then that is put to rest. The Yankees are going to have their full lineup tomorrow and Mariano Rivera is expected to make his first appearance of the spring. If you just want to see him don't turn the game on late, he will be in there early to get his work in. Posted by Gary W. Marchese Jr. at 11:23 PM 0 comments Labels: , , , , , , , , ,
